Talking Re: Grapefruit juice nighttime erections

I'm an "older" male and have had ED for a few years now and occasionally take Viagra to pep me up so to speak. But I too have noticed morning woodies almost to my teen levels - which has been pretty much amazing considering that Viagra works OK - but nothing compared the response that I have been getting from the grapefruit only. Very interesting to say the least. I don't think that this is just coincidence.

My first thought would be that the grapefruit juice is extending the half-life of something in your body. Night time is supposed to be when the body produces the most testosterone. Could be T, could be dopamine, could be anything.

I take replacement testosterone because my testes were removed. A drug-food interaction with testosterone and grapefruit juice is listed in my Lippincott's Nursing Guide that says" Decreased metabolism and risk of toxic effects if combined with grapefruit juice; avoid this combination." I've always told my wife I'm risking death when I have half a grapefruit for breakfast but no such luck here. Maybe it is the decreased metabolism that is allowing more testosterone to accumulate in your body when you're sleeping?

Grapefruit juice is known to inhibits the breakdown of estrogen in the liver. Go figure...

I read that grapefruit was suppose to help increase the production and activity of liver detoxification enzymes which would be helpful in eliminating estrogen like compounds from the liver?

Thanks for the heads up on that. I did have my testosterone tested and they found thart it was normal for my age (60) so maybe it is the dopamine. I've been dioagnosed late in life as ADD which some studies indicate occurs in much lower levels in people with ADD and/or ADHD. So it may be a dopamine issue as you mentioned. Any alternative way to increase my dopamine without taking some kind of anti-depressant? I take Adderol which doesn't help much in the libido area - in fact in my experience it's the anti-libido drug. It would be nice to raise my dopamine and possibly solve 2 problems with one solution.

There's no way of knowing which hormone, neurotransmitter, or other chemical is causing the favorable effect. Grapefruit juice inhibits the breakdown of hormones etc. in the liver, thereby extending their half-life. Now as the half-lives of these hormones/chemicals are extended, the body will usually cut back on the production of these hormones/chemicals since there is sufficient in circulation. The only time the body may not cut back, is if it deems that there is "still room" for more of a particular hormone/chemical. Such an example would be in the case of testosterone. Your body may be producing testosterone but maybe less than what the body deems "okay" before switching off. In such a case it is possible that testosterone will be allowed to accumulate before being switched to lower production. BTW, licorice will cause the same effect, except that licorice also acts as an estrogen, so it is bad for men to take.

Night time wood is cause by the parasympathetic system and some say during REM sleep. I don't see how grapefruit juice inhibits the breakdown of whatever hormones are are responsible for night time wood during the time the parasympathetic system in in charge. Perhaps it acts as a PDE5 inhibitor during REM sleep or a gGMP booster?

Not sure about the PDE5 inhibition during REM sleep or gGMP boosting. I really don't have a solid enough background to comment too intelligently. I tend to agree with 1cc's comments which are born out by some of my other reading. I will say that along the dopamine line I have done some addtiional reading which supports a strong correlative relationship between dopamine and ADD symptoms. Along that line I've taken some sensible steps in trying to improve my dopamine levels like cutting down significantly on caffeine, alcohol and sugar intake. Additionally,I am eating more almonds and bananas whcih are suppose to help. I have subsequently notice a marked improvement in my symptoms - enough to the point that when I don't take any medications I really can't tell a significant difference. My wife, who has been severely aggravated by my condition does not appear have noticed when I have not taken the medications. Hopefully I'm not taking too many liberties here, but the improvement seems substantial.
