Anabolic steroids, taken in tablet or injected in liquid form, are prescription-only drugs but it is not illegal to possess them. However, possession with intent to supply is illegal, carrying a maximum 14-year jail term or unlimited fine.

Only steroids considered "medical products" are legal to possess in the United Kingdom. This has been interpreted as excluding UGL steroids and generic steroids.

The steroid laws in the UK will soon be amended according to the UK Department of Health as follows:

(1) the "medicinal product" requirement will be eliminated
(2) it will become illegal to order steroids over the internet and import via mail;
(3) all steroid importations will require "personal custody" i.e. you must have them in your personal possession when you import them into the UK.
