For the past several months I have been watching my diet and cutting back on calories. I lost 25lbs. I am 47, lifting for 30 years no drugs whatsoever except for occasional Benadryl.
Before going to bed I usually snack on half a cup of unsalted peanuts and cashews. Several weeks ago I started drinking diluted grapefruit juice and water to wash down the cashews. Strange thing. I started getting solid morning wood. Now, if I stop drinking the grapefruit juice, the wood is less pronounced or non existent. Now everywhere I search I find nothing linking grapefruit juice and morning wood. I am not saying it increased my libido, because it has not. Just solid wood. Also, this is not just a full bladder issue because if I wake up in the middle of the night, the wood is there. I have read that grapefruit increase estrogen in the blood. but that does not makes sense to me in this situation. I am not complaining, just curious. Anyone have any ideas?

If your estradiol was below optimal, maybe the grapefruit bumps it up some by slowing metabolism at the liver. Have you tested your levels?

About 3 years ago I was tested and everything was normal according to the Doc John. But that was 3 years ago.
    Thanks LeanGuy for reply

Grapefruit juice decreases insulin resistance. My fasting insulin was very high at 27. After taking grapefruit juice 3 times per day, cinnamon and metformin it droped to >2. That's as good as you can get. Grapefruit didn't do it all but I'm sure it had a huge impact.

You could of had high insulin and high glucose levels and the grapefruit juice reduced them. High insulin and glucose are not exactly good for your sex drive. Many cutting diets use grapefruits to help cut weight.

The chemicals in Grapefruit juice have been proven to change the bio availability and half life of endless medications in numerous studies have been done showing the effects. All I can say is grapefruit juice might be one of those miracle foods for some people.

Interesting post too. My diet is very low carbs in the morning, followed by some carbs in the evening. Now it could be the peanuts and grapefruit interacting? I dont know. Has anyone had similar results?

I've noticed spontaneous erections not long after eating muesli (containing some peanuts) - might be due to the proclaimed effect of L-arginine which peanuts are high in - who knows. Never tried the grapefruit juice but anything that improves erections is always worth shot.

It could just be the weight loss allowing for better blood flow, or eating less saturated fat. I am going to try drinking the grapefruit juice alone and see what happens.

From recent post: Optimizing Erectile Function: A Rational Approach

Another way of increasing nitric oxide in the body is to prevent its rapid degradation by oxygen radicals. Pomegranate and a superoxide dismutase (SOD)-enhancing nutrient called GliSODin have been shown to favorably affect nitric oxide activity31-34 and to reverse clinical measurements associated with endothelial dysfunction in humans.35,36 In the animal model, pomegranate has been shown to increase penile blood flow and improve erectile response to stimulation.37 In a preliminary study, men with mild-to-moderate erectile dysfunction experienced modest improvements after only four weeks of consuming pomegranate juice each day.38 Pomegranate juice has been reported to mildly inhibit an enzyme pathway that degrades certain medications, though this effect is dramatically less pronounced than that produced by the common beverage grapefruit juice.39

    Britman,
    Good research!
I have not drank grapefruit juice for over a week now and the morning wood is all but gone. I am going to have some this week and see if it comes back.

Ater a week of no grapefruit juice and no peanuts, I decided to try my experiement again and the wood returned solid in the morining. For me, grapefruit juice makes me feel good. Thanks for listening.

I picked up this info from a T-Nation article.
"Several varieties of fruits and vegetables have Calcium D-glucarate. This is a botanical extract found in high levels in grapefruit, apples, oranges, broccoli, and brussels sprouts. This extract allows the body to excrete hormones such as estrogen before they can become reabsorbed."

    The full article is here.

another link which confirms grape fruit does increase estrogen:-

BBC NEWS | Health | Grapefruit link to breast cancer

I always like reading the science bit but the bottom line is always eat a good diet based around lots of frsh fruit and veg if you want a healthy body hich includes optimal hormonal levels

Personally I think a handful of all types of nuts & pumkin seeds every day together with a smoothie containg loads of fruit does wonders for erections - the effects are not like cialis of course but I think a good diet with daily exercise probably is better than any drug you could buy

Exactly Britman. Also, keeping bodyfat low, stress reduction, and not worrying about what the magazines/tv/porn say is great sex, makes for great sex.

No I dont own stock in grapefruit. (very funny)
It was just a observation for me personally. The grapefruit juice did nothing for my libido, nor do I drink it like it will be some sort of Vigara. It is not. I was interested in the "why" aspect of it all. Just discussing it.
And I have learned much for some of the excellent posts.

Grapefruit juice nighttime erections Vit B6

I think I have an answer to my own question about Grapefruit Juice. Grapefruit Juice is high in Vitamin B-6. This B vitamin is used by many to lower prolactin levels. Google it. My thoughts are this is the reason why Grapefruit has the effect I have spoken about. So, to avoid some of the negative things associated with grapefruit, I am going to try B-6 supplements to see if the results are the same. It should be noted however NOT to overload on B-6 as a cure for ED, as this can be toxic and create a vitamin B inbalance.
I still think stress is the number one Libido killer.
