PremPro Hormone Replacement Scandal

July 9, 2002 marked an historic date in medical history. In one of the biggest scandals in medical history, government scientists shut down a study on the most commonly used hormone replacement therapy used in the country. These researchers concluded that it was no longer ethical to keep administering the infamous Prempro hormone replacement drug […]

Introduction to Hormone Replacement Therapy Part 2 – Hormone Balancing for Women

July 1, 2001 by Karlis Ullis and Joshua Shackman Leave a Comment

hormone replacement therapy women

Many post-menopausal women in the United States are on some sort of hormone replacement therapy program. However, I believe that hormone replacement therapy the way it is commonly done may cause more harm than good for many women. I prefer to use a personalized, case-by-case approach for my female patients with the goal to restore […]

Introduction to Hormone Replacement Therapy Part 1 – Hormone Balancing for Men

May 15, 2001 by Karlis Ullis and Joshua Shackman Leave a Comment

hormone replacement therapy men

In this two part series, I will be giving an overview of my approach to hormone replacement therapy. I call my approach “hormone balancing”, which is based on the principles of keeping your sex hormones (testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone) at the same levels that they were at in your mid-twenties. In addition to sex hormones, […]

What Overweight Women can Learn from Bodybuilders

August 1, 2000 by Karlis Ullis and Joshua Shackman Leave a Comment

Probably bodybuilders are the last group of people most overweight women would think of asking for advice on how to transform their bodies. Why? To put it bluntly, most women don’t want to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger in drag. However, observing the habits, training, and eating patterns of bodybuilders can work wonders for women and […]

Growth Hormone vs. Testosterone – A Retrospective Based on the Latest Research

November 1, 1999 by Karlis Ullis and Joshua Shackman Leave a Comment

Jintropin - hGH (human growth hormone) and anabolic steroids

I was one of the first private practitioners in the country to dispense growth hormone as part of an overall anti-program hormone replacement program for adults that fit the criteria of the “Adult Onset Growth Hormone Deficiency Syndrome”. Like many other anti-aging physicians, I was extremely impressed by the initial research on growth hormone showing […]

Anorectic Pharmacology Part 2 – Are Diet Drugs Necessary?

August 30, 1999 by Karlis Ullis and Joshua Shackman Leave a Comment

Ephedrine Hydrochloride and Fat Loss

The use of anorectic drugs in medicine has always been a highly controversial issue. It is generally accepted that the problem of obesity comes more from behavior rather than genetics. Many doctors believe that diet drugs should not be used, and instead people wishing to lose weight should simply eat less and exercise. Sounds easy […]

Anorectic Pharmacology Part 1 – The Absurdity of the New Diet Drugs

August 9, 1999 by Karlis Ullis and Joshua Shackman Leave a Comment

Xenical - diet drug

I have greatly enjoyed reading Bill Roberts’ Anabolic Pharmacology Column and I applaud him for his help in bringing much needed common sense to the area of anabolic hormone research. Only recently with the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the AIDS wasting syndromes has research on the therapeutic use of anabolic steroids become respectable again. However, as […]

June 28, 1999 by Karlis Ullis and Joshua Shackman Leave a Comment

estrogen progesterone

When you saw the title of this article, your first reaction might have been “has Dr. Ullis lost his mind?” or “Why the hell would I want to put these hormones into my body that will make me fat and grow breasts?” But before you have me committed, remember from Part I of this series […]

Contrarian Endocrinology Part 1 – Testosterone for Women

June 7, 1999 by Karlis Ullis and Joshua Shackman 3 Comments

testosterone estrogen

In this series of articles, I will attempt to bring clarity to two common myths about endocrinology. The first myth is the notion of the exclusivity of “male” and “female” sex hormones. While it is true that men have higher concentrations of testosterone and lower concentrations of estrogen and progesterone than women, all of these […]
