Over three years ago, MSNBC determined that anabolic steroids were sold on Ebay after a three-month investigation. I’m not sure why it took them three months to learn that steroids were sold on the popular auction site (“Steroid dealers use ruse to sell wares on eBay,” January 20, 2005).
In October and November [2004], an NABP investigator purchased four items on eBay that appeared to be steroids, paying between $90 and $140 for each order. In two cases, eBay shut down the auctions before they ran their course.
“I got a notice from eBay saying this auction was ended because of a violation of the rules, but the transaction still went through,” said the investigator, who spoke on condition of anonymity...
All four products — injectable solutions in factory packaging, oral tablets labeled in Spanish as being for veterinary use and unmarked pills in a plastic bag — turned out to be just what the sellers claimed they were: anabolic steroids like Dianabol, Sustanon and testosterone propionate.
Guess what? Ebay continues to be used to sell anabolic steroids in spite of efforts by the billion dollar auction website and the DEA to prevent it. Currently, an individual in Biloxi, Mississippi is trying to sell Dianabol on Ebay.
This auction is for exactly what you think it is dont bother asking its for real i have 5 of these lots for sale . gain 20 pounds of real muscle in one month auction is for 100 , 10 m g tabs enjoy auction buy it now is 125.00
i can also get a laundry list of other supplements just let me know what you are looking for . do not bid on this auction it is a buy it now only to keep things as safe as possible
The auction has been active for 9 hours with 2 days, 15 hours remaining. I wonder how much longer it will stay up? Surely, the seller realizes there is no anonymity using ebay and paypal and that the distribution of anabolic steroids is illegal in Biloxi and the rest of the United States?
I’m not sure why people do stupid things like this where they will obviously be caught. The DEA regularly monitors ebay for the sale of anabolic steroids according to a written statement by the DEA given to MSNBC.
“The DEA now regularly conducts ‘key-word searches’ of eBay to identify and removed steroid … listings from the auction pool,” it said. “We have also provided eBay with an extensive list of Schedule III anabolic steroids (both trade and generic names) to add to their ‘filters’ to prevent the substances from appearing on their site.”
The MSNBC report stated that many ebay sellers of anabolic steroids listed the drugs as “steroid books” to avoid detection.
A few of the auctions occurred in the open but many used the simple ruse of listing the drugs as “books about steroids” to avoid detection by the site’s security team.
As a result of this report three years ago, I personally received a lot of scrutiny because I sold the anabolic steroid information book, Anabolics by William Llewellyn on Ebay. In the weeks following the release of the report, I had orders for this book from customers at the Department of Homeland Security and and offices of the U.S. Attorney; a personal attorney for President George W. Bush even signed up for my newsletter.
Fortunately, I only sold steroid books. But still it was somewhat disconcerting that the government started monitoring my speech on anabolic steroids.
