The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Drug Section arrested at least eight individuals suspected of involvement in anabolic steroid trafficking during steroids bust as a result of Operation Jellybean in January 2007. The steroid bust disrupted hundreds of thousands of dollars in anabolic steroids sales throughout New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and even Ontario.
Defendant Mark Anthony Haig pleaded guilty to five counts of conspiracy to traffic anabolic steroids and prescription drugs. At least two of his co-conspirators are standing trial for steroid-related crimes in the next few months (“Jellybean suspect pleads guilty to steroid charges,” October 23).
Mark Anthony Haig, 38, of Chance Harbour was scheduled to stand trial in federal court in the coming months on five counts of conspiracy to traffic in anabolic steroids and other drugs banned under the Food and Drug Act.
Instead, he opted Wednesday to re-elect to be tried in provincial court and then pleaded guilty to all five counts, which allege he conspired with several others between Sept. 19, 2006, and Jan. 23, 2007, to traffic in the illegal substances.
Among those co-accused along with Haig were Spencer Gordon Court, 32, of Maugerville and Ontario resident Vincent Gemmeti, who face 31 and 27 charges respectively as a result of the Jellybean investigation.
