The proprietors of EDS-Research.com, a research chemical company, were arrested for selling research chemicals in what authorities have sensationalized as a “shocking international drug operation in a small home in the Village of Reedsville.” It has also been identified as a “prescription drug repackaging operation” that imported drugs from China with a daily revenue of $1000-2000. Manitowoc County Sheriff Rob Hermann was impressed by the research chemical operation moreso than any other drug operation that he’s seen in his career (“Police Raid Alleged Prescription Pill Lab,” October 30).
“A lot of equipment they had was large-scale manufacturing equipment, things that we would typically not see during the normal course of our business,” Detective Sergeant Pete McGinty of the Two Rivers Police Department said.
“In 25 years I’ve never seen such an operation. We’ve conducted search warrants in marijuana grow houses, crystal meth labs, meth cathedone manufacturing. I’ve never seen anything like this in 25 years,” Sheriff Hermann said.
The sheriff thought that ShonTay Dessart and his partner were selling “steroid-type” drugs from their house reflecting the widespread misconception that all ancillary drugs and performance enhancing drugs that are used by bodybuilders and athletes are anabolic steroids.
“They would manufacture different types of pills, I believe generic forms of Viagra and then some growth hormone-type pills like steroid-type pills I’d call it. They were manufactured, packaged, and sold over the Internet,” Manitowoc County Sheriff Rob Hermann said.
The EDS-Research.coms website reveals that they offered the following ancillary drugs for sale in powder form: albuterol, anastrozole (Arimidex), clenbuterol hydrochloride (Spiropent), clomiphene citrate (Clomid), exemestane (Aromasin), finasteride (Propecia), letrozole (Femara), sildenafil citrate (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), tamoxifen citrate (Nolvadex), vardenafil hydrochloride (Levitra). [Common brand names are noted in parentheses.]
The following research peptides were also offered for sale on their website: 176-191 HGH frag, CJC-1295, GHRP-6, IGF-1 LR3, mechano growth factor (MGF), melanotan II, and PEG MGF.
Albuterol was also offered in a flavored liquid suspension as well as in an encapsulated version.
A few research chemical companies have been busted even though the sale of research chemicals, that would otherwise require a prescription, are permitted under some circumstances. It is unclear specifically how the busted research chemical companies were allegedly in violation of the law. Perhaps it was that bulk powder sales of research chemicals e.g. ResearchChemist.com?
Or in the case of EDS-Research.com, perhaps it was the “flavored” research chemicals that were sold on their website? Maybe adding flavoring to research chemicals suggests the products are actually for human consumption? Federal authorities may not have viewed as legitimate research chemicals with cherry, cranberry, grape, huckleberry, passion fruit, root beer, sugar free black cherry, sugar free french vanilla, sugar free lemon, peach, watermelon, strawberry, and raspberry flavors.
The following agencies were involved in the raid: Manitowoc County Metro Drug Unit, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Postal Inspector, the Reedsville Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Wisconsin State Crime Lab.
