Slow filtering, what am I doing wrong?

Did my first ever homebrew last night. The brewing was super easy minus the 5 or so mL of bold cyp I spilled because I was jumpy.

However, when I went to filter, it seemed impossible to actually filter. At first I tried a 10mL syringe with a .22 micron, 13 mm filter and barely got a freakin drop out of it. So then I moved to a 3mL syringe and it took me an entire fucking hour to filter that. I did this by hand. I tried a caulk gun with the 10mL syringe but I couldn't get it to stay lined up.

I read another thread a guy said he did 50mL in 10-15 minutes. What am I doing wrong? is the 13mm filter too small? I know going to a 25mm will quadruple the surface area of the filter membrane, so I have to assume this was my error.

Also I will have to refilter the 3mL anyways because after re-examining, I bought what I thought were sterile filters, but they were non-sterile.

Are you using a caulking gun? If not , you should be..

Ah I see, you need either a smaller caulking gun, or a bigger syringe, like 60ml

Warm the syringe without needle, it will speed up the process… warm, not overwarm

Idk if you did this or not but make sure every time you draw up to filter the solution is adequately warm. This helps a lot! I use 60ml syringes and they work great in any standard caulk gun.

Warm the syringe without needle, it will speed up the process… warm, not overwarm

I used a pan on my stovetop to heat the oil. It was still warm when I first started filtering. The beaker was warm/hot to the touch, but not hot enough to burn me. So maybe 110-115F?

Idk if you did this or not but make sure every time you draw up to filter the solution is adequately warm. This helps a lot! I use 60ml syringes and they work great in any standard caulk gun.

So does this filter diameter not matter? I'll look into using a bigger syringe with caulking gun I suppose

You should use a wider on in my opinion, it’s gonna be a little slow anyways you do it, but I would believe a smaller diameter would make it an even more time consuming process.

But you should at least be able to get a quick dribble, or a slow stream.

Yea, the best I could get was about 2 drips per second with just my hands. Double the diameter of a circle quadruples the surface area so that means that I should get about 4 times the flow out of a 25mm vs 13mm. Which seems so fucking obvious now but was not a thought in my mind when I bought them

Haha i dont even think about the size of the filter I use anymore, i had to look. Yea i use 25mm an i can get through 40ml in several minutes

fuck switch to a bottle top filter.. 500ml… could do the vacuum even with a handpump…

0.22 micron PVDF / PTFE / NYLON and you ll be fine

and you need a glass media bottle GL45… dont use the plastic one that comes with the top filter, it crashes after 2 seconds… and even dont store oils into plastic bottles… BB destroys the plastic… personal experience

Maybe in the future, but not right now, I need to instill my confidence with the process. I have Bold C, NPP, Tren A and E, MENT, DHB, Test C and P, and Primo E raws. I have never used half of those compounds but I want to try them all.

This is ALL for personal use, I refuse to try to sell any of it.

I would love to get all the high tech gear, but I want to make sure this is something I plan to do more than once before I invest the money. I'm all about working smarter and not harder

Use a new filter every vial and 20ml will take a couple minutes. When you try to filter 50ml or more the time is extended. I can do 200ml in roughly 45 minutes by hand without getting tired or sore. I also switch needles and syringes each time, so I'm always using sterile tools. The first 20ml flows like water.
