I saw this routine in a Men's Health and was wondering if anyone has tried it.
Squats 3 X5
Bench 3X 5
Deadlift 3X5
Says to do 3 times a week for 3 weeks then go back to your normal routine.

lol...men's health ripping Rippetoe's workout. Thats funny. Go get Starting Strength and Prractical Programming and you'll see where they got that idea from.
Yes, its a great workout for beginners. It envolves linear progression, meaning you try to increase weight every workout or whenever you complete the sets and reps with a certain weight. The workout itself goes like this:

Workout A
Squat
Bench
Pullup

Workout B
Squat
Press
Deadlift

You alternate between the two every workout. You can add one or two assistance exercises, preferably dips and chins. Some people like to do rows instead of pullups. Later on you can add powercleans. There's quite a few options, just don't screw with the simplicity and focus of the program: increase the weight on the bar for the big three lifts for as long as you can.

Go read the stickies on madcows 5x5 and check out elitefitness.com's training forum stickies. You'll find stuff on 3x5 there. Ultimately I suggest you get Rippetoe's books, they're invaluable.
