Barry Bonds' lawyers ask judge to toss conviction

The jury convicted Bonds of obstructing justice for a verbal exchange where he was asked in the grand jury whether Anderson ever gave him anything that "required a syringe." The specific statement found to be evasive contained a meandering response when Bonds said, among other things, "I was a celebrity child, not just in baseball by my own instincts. I became a celebrity child with a famous father."

Bonds' lawyers argue the exchange was one of many dealing with the same question from prosecutors and taken out of context and that it undermines the obstruction statute to convict him of "felony prolixity" -- being long-winded.

"No rational argument can be made that the grand jury was influenced, or reasonably could have been influenced, on the subject of injectable substances by Mr. Bonds's discussion of his pedigree," his lawyers wrote.
