Basic whip.

I was wondering if anyone can provide a reputable link to some basic test brewing directions...I was looking but there is stuff everywhere about it..was wondering if someone can point me in a good direction. I thought I saw a link in a thread here which looked to be good but I'm having trouble finding it now .

1) calculate your recipe beforehand. Don't use online calculators.
2) clean everything off with detergent and distilled water.
3) everything pre filter just needs to be clean while everything post filter needs to be sterile.
4) sterilize post filter glassware like media jars and vials with 500deg F heat for 1-2hrs
5) mix powder, solvents, oil, etc in beaker and apply a little bit of heat to get into solution.
6) filter
7) put in vials

That's just the basics but should give you an idea of the overall steps involved.

Not to hijack thread, but question Doc. I have been cleaning and sterilizing as talked about above, but I have an autoclave that I'm not even using. All my pre filter glassware gets cleaned and then dried in oven at 250 for 30-45 mins what ever it takes at time. Was thinking, rather then run oven at 500 for two hours, how about sterilizing post filter glassware in autoclave after a wash. Then I could dry them all at the lower temp and shorter time. Anything wrong with that idea? My autoclave is large enough I could do my pre filter stuff to, so it's all sterile.

Back to OP's question. I learned most of what I started with on basskiller' site. Check it out.

Completely noob questio...but what is the autoclaves function
Autoclave is a hopped up pressure cooker that sterilizes through heat, pressure, and steam. Mine runs around 15psi on the glassware setting with a temp around 260 I believe it is(haven't run it in a while). With the pressure and effect of the steam, it sterilizes with out the higher temps needed with dry heat. Same can be achieved with oven, just takes higher temps and longer times.

So it is essential for sterilization ..does equiptment like that cost a pretty penny...it sounds expensive as fuck
Not essential. It's a luxury I guess you could say. I got a deal on mine in good shape for $400. You can do all your sterilizing in your kitchen oven

What about wiping down your kitchen counter workspace with bleach as part of prep, as well as washing all your measuring glassware in an antibacterial soap (making sure it is all well rinsed afterward) before sterilizing?

I prefer to spray everything down with alcohol, so it dries clean. Yes, I use nitrile gloves as well.

A bleach solution or alcohol to clean your work area is good. It won't sterilize, but you just want a very clean work area. Your equipment should be very clean as well, but you don't have to stress sterility. Your gear should be sterile and anything that it comes into contact after filtering. It is good to practice cleanliness and if you want to go above and beyond that is wonderful. As for glassware I clean it very well with a bleach solution and then rinse with a dish soap solution and then rinse thoroughly with water. I use a hot plate and I place my beaker on the hot plate at high temperature to dry and kill any bacteria that may he present. Then after a few minutes I place in order, oil, powder, bb, ba and let heat and dissolve for a few minutes. Then I turn off and allow the oil to keep cooking on the hot plate as the hot plate slowly cools down. Temps of around 250f will not degrade your product. I'll let it cool to a very warm and I'll start to filter into vials. From the filter to the vials needs to be sterile. Using a thin carrier like mct oil (now brand from amazon is great) certainly makes bottling a breeze as well as injecting. You dont need filtered or sterile oil. With a caulking gun, 60cc syringes, a thin carrier oil and syringe filters brewing 1 to 2 hundred ml at a time is a breeze. Anything more than that and I'll break out the pump. So hot plate, beakers, 60cc and 3 to 5 ml syringes, 18g needles and 23g needles, whatman syringe filters, caulking gun, alcohol swabs, mct oil, bb, ba, powder, I believe that's it. Off the top of my head and slightly distracted so hopefully I didn't forget anything.

It you do the oven at 250 it needs to be in there longer. Using the autoclave will be fine too
