I've noticed on a few threads I follow, that lately, bigger arms seems to be a topic of conversation. Chasing those elusive 18's is the ultimate goal...Unless you're one of the lucky bastard's that got 'em and of course it's on to the 19's...never happy.
There are of course, as with anything related to fitness, many different philosophies. It's never a matter of right or wrong but whether what works for you. Of course you have to try different things to know that and we all know the definition of insanity. "Doing the same thing and expecting different results". If your not getting what you want, try something different. So...what's working for you or maybe what you're doing isn't working and you'll get some ideas here.

This is what I'm currently doing...

1. I don't go heavy on bi's and tri's. At my age I fear going heavy on bi's may lead to a distal bicep tendon tear and too heavy on tri's tortures my elbows.
2. I keep my weights where I'm hitting anywhere from 10 to 15 reps per set. If I want to finish off with a good pump I'll go lighter for my last exercize and shoot for 20 reps.
3. Always mind body connection. I focus on the muscle being worked.
4. Especially for bi's and tri's, contract at the apex of the movement.
5. I do light tri's ant the end of chest days. Just 4 sets of whatever tricep movement I feel like that day. Same thing for bi's on back day.
6. At the end of my week is arm day. I do arms at the end of my week because that way I can kill'em and they have some time to recoup before I start the next week.
7. I superset bi's then tri's with no rest in between them and then 90 seconds rest between sets.

This is a typical arm day for me... 3 sets each superset

Straight bar curls
Two handed dumbbell tricep extensions

Machine preacher curls
EZ bar skull crushers

Cable curls
Tricep push downs

Hammer curls
Behind the back weighted bench dips

Some other movements I like...
Dips
Smith skull crushers (don't knock it. great isolation)
Close grip bench
Concentration curls
Smith drag curls

Good lookin arm day Mel. I remember how you like to hit both bi's and tri's on a same day from your log.

Incline DB curls are an excellent way to get a good stretch.

Just wanted to be the first to reply. :)

I don't have an arm day any more.
Now arms are "ancillary" work. I get about 3 sets of bi's and 3 sets of tri's in after my compound stuff is done for the day. I amended my program to include these ED now and is working out fine. So long as it doesn't effect my major lifts.

I've been doing heavy reps of 5 today. Tomorrow I'll do 8's then maybe 12's the day after. Undulating like that. A big corn fed boy like myself I see that heavy is the way to go. Prefer 5's myself

For the most part heavy bent barbell rows (pendlay style), dumbbell rows, dumbbell inclines & flats are my primary arm builders. They are quite effective in their role. Especially done at the frequency of ED as my program calls for. No need for an "arm day".

I've been considering doing an everyday format. Not to failure but just to keep the pump on a daily basis. Thought I'd try that for a few weeks just to get out of my routine and then go back to the supersets. I think I'll try that when I finish this cut. Not doing 5's like you do. That still scares me with these aged tendons I got but maybe in the 10 rep range.
Thanks Trukk.

Maybe I'll start with those this week 7. Start with a good stretch.
Thanks

No failure and it's not for the pump. It's DFT (dual factor training). Popularized from the east. I respect it's principles and they work

I believe proper is by your side relaxed
But we all measure flexed. And most measure with a pump. I do not. I believe it's misleading

Same with chest measurements. I see some people measure a fully flexed chest&back. It's supposed to be nipple thru arm pit to nipple relaxed.
Well then I measure chest correctly but I do measure arms flexed but I do it cold.

So, the proper way is to measure flexed with a pump and tell everyone you measured relaxed by your side...

Got it. :)

I'd like to know what the hell my arms measure... gotta be 25" at least. :D

Then this is the moment we all realize what a real 20" arm might look like:eek:

The only measurement that doesn't change from relaxed to flexed is my quads&calves. The same either way, weird:confused:
