Bone growth, thickening

Please excuse my ignorance but I'm wondering if lifting weights promotes the growth of bones in terms of girth. I seem to recall something about weight training used to maintain bone density in old people but I'm wondering if it can cause thickening of bones in young weight lifters (in their 20's for example). Thanks guys.

true, i'd have to guess that it probably does to some level but not drastic. i'm in my 20's and i've been lifting for about 8 years and i can tell that my wrists have gotten a bit larger but i don't think it would cause you to go from having small bones to large bones
