I just finished For Whom the Bell Tolls and want to increase my training knowledge. Anybody got any suggestions for good books on strength training? I think I'm going to order Starting Strength even though I was afraid that it may be directed at folks a little younger than me. Any others?
 
"Serious Strength Training" by Tudor Bompa is pretty good.

"The Strongest Shall Survive" Dont remember who its by.
 
How do you guys pick your books with there being so much misleading info out there? ... Anything on the internet you recommend
 
The Meso training section stickies. IMHO, there is better information in those 6 or 8 stickies than you will ever find in any book or magazine.

Probably some of the best texts written on the subject of training. Be aware that some of these are likely more technical than what one typically finds at B&N or geared to the lay person. I believe all are available either from www.elitefts.com or www.dynamic-eleiko.com (products, Sportivny Press).

Cyniq, first off I like your taste in Hemingway. The Sun Also Rises is definitely one of my favs.

Anyway, Madcow's list is great. IMO, however, if you've read Supertraining you have effectively read them all. Therefore, I would recommend going to elitefts.com and buying it. Be forewarned, however, that the first time through it it is intimidating...like worse than The Sound and the Fury by Faulkner.

I think it would be a great idea if we had a Supertraining class on here, like a big thread going through the book section by section with discussion, questions, etc. There is a lot to be learned from that book. I would definitely like going through it again (5th time) because each time you read it you see something you didn't see before. If you know that book, you essentially know strength training theory to a tee.

Let me also suggest Facts and Fallacies by Mel Siff as well. It is an easier read, and he dispels a lot of myths that abound in the fitness world. That guy had a bullshit detector like no other.
 
There's a Supertraining Yahoo Group that was very popular and is still active with tons of good info on there. Siff was involved and some really great minds have posted there over the years.

For some supplemental reading, you could pick up MILO, the 4 yearly periodical published by ironminds. It has some really good articles in it and has insight from some of the leading PL/OL/SM out there.

Madcow, you're right the ST group on Yahoo is very good, although it suffered when Mel passed. I am a fairly active member on there now, but most of my time is spent reading through the archives. The functional training, stability ball homos are creeping in there daily...it's a shame.

MILO is a good mag from what I have heard, but I have only read a couple of them. It's a very diverse source of information, everything from strongman to oly lifting.

Purepowermag.com also has a good magazine. It is geared more toward athletic performance, but there are some good articles there. I just subscribed, and the writers for it are very good and very smart.

I checked out fortifiediron once and liked it. I wish I had more time to hang around different boards, but Meso has always been my place so I spend 99% of my time on here. There were a couple guys on fortified though who knew their stuff pretty good.

LOL. I put Faulkner and Joyce in the same category. Every once in a while I start thinking a little too much of myself and my intellect. Then I'll pick up Finnegan's Wake or As I Lay Dying and read myself humble. ;) Thanks very much for the suggestions.

Would love a subscription to Milo or a collection of back issues. My wife does our subscriptions and gives them to me as presents (loving the Surfers Journal - by far the best surf magazine out there, like surfing's Milo). Heard good things about purepowermag.com too. I read one issue or some type of squatting thing they did.

As long as we are on it, you might check out the forums at www.charliefrancis.com sometime. I've been really impressed with the knowledgebase regarding weight training there. Obviously, they know their shit for sprinting and track. I don't think I've posted there but lurking has been good.
 
starting strength, is a good book. really aimed at beginners, but i think just about anyone would enjoy it. i think there are lots of people who have trained for 10+ years who would learn a lot from it.

supertraining, zatsiorskys book, others that have been mentioned are great... no one had mentioned getting a good basic physiology text book, which i think is also a great idea.
