What's everyones choice when it comes to hotplates? Looking around online some are awfully expensive. I'm ok with stirring it with a rod, just need a hotplate

the cheapest one possible. you don't need one with a big screen TV on it.

All you need is a LITTLE heat, no need to spend more money on a hot plate

Well yeah, I was more or less hoping someone found a deal somewhere before I spend $40

Stove top on a big pan,
Waited until it was almost hot to the touch and put my glassware on top.

Heated it up just the right amount.
Not sure if it's the right way but it worked.

For personal use brewing
a coffee cup warmer + beaker is enough

Alright so precise temp isn't too important?

You just want oil to get WARM, not hot.

Oil bath also helps reduce overall temp.
Cooking oil is OK.
Don't use water baths, as oil absorbs water vapor and can become cloudy.
