Combating Shin Pumps

Lately I’ve been getting shin pumps while jogging. Typically after about a mile, I have to ease up to a slow walk. What do you do to reduce or eliminate this issue, aside from reducing dosages? Truth be told, I like jogging almost as much as lifting so this a disappointing development. Thanks for the tips.

What kind of shoes you have? I know that doesn’t seem like it could be that simple but back in the day when I ran a lot (also on tren and other stuff) it was as simple as my shoes. I went to a Dicks they had a scanner to identify best shoes for my arches. So now even to this day 16 years later I only use Brooks Ghost. I’m assuming by pumps your meaning shin splints as they are referred the same sometimes. That pain right next to the ol shin bone

I have a few different pair of running shoes, ASICS gel venture and brooks beasts, none worn out to my knowledge. I’m having the same issue regardless of footwear. I’ve been jogging consistently for about a year and a half now with no prior issues.

Best guess is either weight gain, up 10 pounds but I’ve been heavier in the recent past, or side effect from test/deca?

I don’t think it’s shin splints, it’s feels like severe muscle tightness. It’s not full on cramping up, just a painful tightness that feels like it’s about to cramp up.

I don’t think it’s your compounds. Been there done that. The weight gain and not having proper running form, possibly. If you can get those arches checked to make sure those are still the correct shoes as you’ve aged and those arches can change with the loads from lifting. Try some dorsiflexion band stretches and foam rolling before and after running. Body weight clave raises also.

I get this now also. I was a long distance runner for about half my time in the Army. Never had any issues apart from the normal running injuries. Stopped running for 1-2 years and now every time I start walking fast, jogging or running I get the pump as you described it. My shins swell up sometimes so bad I struggle to lift my foot when jogging.

Look up compartment syndrome. Or Chronic exertional compartment syndrome.

Are you on any orals?
Enough orals and I get pumps walking..
I have experimented with some low dose Anavar recently. Is there any way to combat the issue aside from dropping or discontinuing the compound?

I’ve been taking the dose in the am before working out, maybe try my cardio in the evening? I think the pumps predated the Anavar but I can discontinue just to confirm.

Taurine
Magnesium
Stretching

In my experience, it’s a conditioning problem. Start reasonably and manage expectations, if they pump up then walk like you have been, and check your electrolytes. You are probably low on potassium like most are.

Also supplementing runs with high incline walks on a treadmill at a good pace will help significantly to condition your legs again to run. I run a significant amount and can keep a solid 6:30-7 minute mile pace for 3-5 miles at 5’11 215 and pretty lean.

A good way to get started too is 3 runs a week, 1 long slow run, 1 interval “sprint” day, and 1 tempo run for just a mile. For the long slow run do just that, run for 30-60 min at a nice easy pace, and walk when needed to keep heart rate down/let the pumps dissipate. For the interval day, do 4-6 quarter mile runs at a decently fast pace and take an equal amount of rest, and then for the mile run go at a faster pace or “goal” pace for the mile and leave it at that. Then incline walks on the days in between and after a few weeks you should be solid.

And to echo what others said as well, running form, mid foot strike and don’t push it if it hurts. I’m partial to zero drop shoes and love altra’s. I get as many people possible on zero drop shoes, it’s an adjustment at first but my calves, feet and ankles feel amazing. This was a lot but I hope that helps.

This issue isn’t a conditioning issue or hydration issue. I’ve tried everything over the years and compartment syndrome usually requires surgery. Fast walking even short distances can cause the lower legs to swell. And it’s a different type of discomfort than shin splints. I’ve experienced those also. Once the activity has ceased the blood pressure starts lowering in the lower legs and the pain goes away.

I drink plenty of water, the pee test is good except maybe first thing in the morning. And I’m well past all the initial conditioning issues. It’s crept up over the past couple weeks. Went from easy 3+ mile jogs without issue down to 1/2 to 3/4 before I can’t tolerate. I’m thinking either an issue is developing, related to the compounds I’ve introduced, or a combination.

Will read up on the condition and reduce compounds just to eliminate a potential possibility.

Not saying this is my issue but worth looking at if you are reading this thread.

Another thread from MESO discussing the issue.

Just an update, the Anavar might not be causing the issue but it’s definitely exasperating the issue. I waited to this afternoon to jog and tightness was nowhere near as bad.

I’m going to see if a reduced dose eliminates the issue. I prefer to do cardio right after lifting so I know it’ll get done. Thanks for the help and will update again at some point.

the only time i met this issue was +4 months on tren dosed moderately.

after ceasing tren its went away for life.

it got so bad at one point 15 min walks and i was done for.

defiently dont wanna go back to those times. seems like guys ive spoken with that has done moderate tren dosages or higher for longer periods of time have experienced the same. dont speak about electrolytes to me, i track everything even water intake.

the issue was isolated to being on my feet, i did one hour of cardio on the bike max level everyday back then and felt i could go for 3 hours more.
