Cooking with just a kettle

Hello boys,

Seek advice on how to broaden my culinary experiences...

I travel a lot for work and often stay in a hotel where there's a kettle (water boiling pot) but no microwave or other cooking gear. There's a large grocery store nearby, a fridge in the room, and I can bring back home any leftover ingredients so they don't go to waste.

Besides oat porridge with berries, what can I cook with ingredients from a normal supermarket and just a kettle?

Let's hear what you got.

I'm away from home a lot too and I enjoy food/need to eat healthy so the solution for me was to buy a small portable camping stove that uses disposable gas bottles.

I can pan fry a steak or chicken breast with some veg, make eggs/omelettes, and basically cook most of the quick meals that I eat at home from the back of my car/van or any hotel room.

If you're cooking in a hotel room....make sure you don't cook anything that gives off smoke or you will set off the alarms and get kicked out. Gas bottles are not allowed in most hotels and neither is cooking food in rooms.

My stove comes in it's own little suitcase so it's easy to carry around and the little gas cannisters only cost a few £/$ each and will cook at least 5 meals.

Nice idea. I could get a similar but electric. I think you're right, frying up some eggs or chicken breast will easily set off the smoke detector.
Still hoping for something that'll taste nice from just boiling water...
(I buy roasted chicken in the same supermarket)

Yeah, a portable electric hob will be just as good but I wanted something that I could also use if I didn't have access to a plug socket.

There really isn't much cooking you can do with boiled water from a kettle unless you wanna just reconstitute dry meals like pot noodles/pot rice etc.

You should be able to whip up some soups.

I imagine you use a lot of protein powder on the road?

I’d more inclined to get a can opener and whip up some tuna sandwiches. Lots of protein and carbs if you are training.... plus the hotel will just think you had a stinky girl over... lol ;)

Protein powder, skyr (Icelandic protein yoghurt), roast chicken breast, protein cookies, boiled eggs (grab a bunch of them at the breakfast restaurant)
I hate canned tuna unfortunately.

If you don't mind taking it with you on your travels I don't think you'll beat an air fryer. Most meals can be cooked from fresh in 10-20 minutes and also doesn't let any smoke off.

Air fryer is brilliant, it's the most useful kitchen appliance that we have. But it's a bit too much to carry on a trip. Thanks for suggestion though.

Wow, this is really a way out, I travel a lot for work. And there was always a problem to cook, and this is a really good way out.
