Several bloodied puppies which apparently had been shot full of steroids in order to make them more aggressive were confiscated early Monday morning from what police say was a dog-fighting arena set up in the basement of a vacant west-side home.
Officers from the Detroit Police Department's Central District were on patrol at about 2 a.m. Monday when they saw a man near a home in the 500 block of Mt. Vernon carrying an object that appeared to be an animal crate, Sgt. Eren Stephens-Bell said.
"The officers got out of their car to investigate, and they saw the man walk to the rear of the home," Stephens-Bell said. "As they approached, they saw the man rubbing his hands in the snow; there was a red substance in the snow that looked like blood. It appeared he was trying to wash the blood off his hands." "We also found syringes and steroids that apparently were being shot into the dogs," Stephens-Bell said.

"While some may view dogfighting as a low-priority crime, this type of criminal activity is a magnet that breeds violence in our neighborhoods and cannot be tolerated," Detroit Police Chief James Barren said Monday in a statement. "Anyone who has ever witnessed or heard a dogfight take place never forgets the experience. Dogfighting is an extremely brutal act and anyone who participates deserves maximum charges for animal cruelty."
