The long and short is that it has long been publicized that this particular yellow dye has a biological effect on animals and humans which causes what is perceived as "hyper-activity". So the general notion has been, that if you were to hand a person a bag of yellow M&Ms ONLY, they would get pretty rev'd up from eating them.
WHAT CAUGHT ME ATTENTION RECENTLY (as my children are doing Science fair), is that I was looking at different examples and there is one where a 5th grader did an experiment with this yellow dye (in liquid form just like you would buy at the store), and using lab rats. The 5th Grade science fair project actually instructs the children to use REAL SCIENTIFIC METHOD (control group all that jazz) to come about their intended data. What alarmed me was seeing this child's STUDY of this dye published, and WHAT the results were...!
The joke in my mind I had running was that "yea, it would be funny to rev a kid up on yellow m&m's and send em home to parents" -LOL... But as it turns out, this yellow dye may be having an entirely different action on the mind and body...!! The study this child completed DETERMINED via the use of REPETITIVE SPEED TEST ON RATS. What happened to the rats drinking the yellow dye was SURPRISING. The dye NOT ONLY Did not have an "Amphetamine" type effect, it caused the rats to become extremely inefficient. In short, GO BATSHIT...! The times on the rats when under the influence of yellow dye more than doubled. So they lost over 100% efficiency in the tasks which they were trained to be EXPERTS in completing..!! So in short, its not really clear if the yellow dye could even be called a "STIMULANT". While something is "Stimulated" - IT REMAINS UNCLEAR JUST WHAT...! So now think of "Bath Salts" and wonder... Did I mention I THINK the rats became somewhat HOSTILE, IRRATIONAL, and AGGRESSIVE as well.!!!
The psychological PARADOX or anomaly which I see occurring here is that this dye is yet allowed into food circulation, and ONLY because the amount in normal exposure is so limited. There are only so many yellow M&Ms in a bag - "Right".. So here is an interesting experiment... DOES M&/MARs acknowledge this??!! So how would we prove this?? Gather say 100 bags of M&Ms from stores as a good random sampling, and then open them all individually COUNTING the number of yellow M&Ms in each bag and SEE IF THERE IS A CONTROLLED PROPORTION in each bag. And whether or not it is MORE or LESS even..!!! Because the initial IMPLIED PARADIGM with regard to M&Ms is that they are all placed in there at RANDOM.. But truth be told, when you think about it they CAN NOT be placed in there at random. Because TRUE PROBABILITY would have some folks getting less or more of something, and in an UNCONTROLLED or UNPREDICTABLE fashion. And the TRUTH is that HUMANS NEED PREDICTABILITY, else psychological STRESS is elicited. And NO ONE needs this - Right...?!!!! Therefore is rations that M&M's MUST BE controlling the color distribution to avoid this "consumer disappointment". After all, we could not have this child getting a bag with no Reds or Yellows or whatever, now could we...!

SO the POINT is that M&Ms is most likely controlling the bag color counts. With that said, and IF... Determined to be true. Then we could determine from the counts what there intended color distribution is. Keep in mind - INTENDED. So what would this say about WHAT they might know. Or even NOT Know...!
Consider that WHAT HAS PROMPTED this thought process other than the fact that we were just randomly perusing other children's experiments to get ideas, is that I have had my suspicions about RC COLA as of late. First I have been wondering how such a quality cola could be on the market competing with the big boys, and yet only be $.88 at WalMart for so long, and when Cokes and Pepsi are a buck fifty...?!? The stuff is good. And I also recall it started out when we first started drinking it as NOTABLY having a different feeling associated with it, as opposed to caffeine in other beverages. RC Cola does denote "Caffeine" on the label as well. The feeling was so odd, that it left a different sensation when quitting it for a couple of days, as well as a different "rev up" when starting back..!!! Finally I will note that once we made a move to buy RC Cola ONLY, the entire DIFFERENCE in these sensations went away as we became completely accustomed to it.!!! The REALLY IMPORTANT POINT being that I started to note that arguments amongst family members became increasingly hostile and odd, in that the just got crazier as seemingly over things that just did not make sense, or merit that much passion, or at odd times - even stripping away happiness from otherwise 'good times" that should be SELF-PROTECTIVE to staying GOOD...! So I have been wondering what they might put in there that's different.
A quick review of the label and hmmm, there is nothing odd here right. Just your run of the mill stuff. Then it occurred to me the ambiguity remaining in a label, which is presented these days as being "fully disclosing" all ingredients. So now look a little closer and what do you see? You see an "ingredient" which is listed as "Artificial Colors" or something like that. So WHAT does this mean. It means that the TRUE DETAIL of this "INGREDIENT", IS COMPLETELY VAGUE. And only as precise, and every bit as vague, as the TERM "Artificial Colors" CAN possibly allow. So how vague is this?? Well analyzed as follows...:
1. They don't even tell you which colors they are using. We just assume "Dark, black, or Cola Colored"// Right??... ... ! Could you put #5 Yellow in with dark coloring. I bet my ass they could. Cause the dark colors would supersede, override, and cover-up any yellow applied.. I would think...
2. They don't tell you how much "Artificial Color" they actually use. It just says they use it...!
SO that's just the surface and an interesting analysis of how we again can easily LIE with what is perceived as TRUTH and even "precision"...! Now what else are they putting in there?! What else is WHO putting in WHAT? How important is the TRUST you place in the PRODUCTs and MANUFACTURERS that make them for you!! How TRUE is the concept of "you get what you pay for"?? And what do we sacrifice in this race to save a buck just to survive in an ever inflating economy...!?! And with all that said and pertaining to the initial construct of this inquiry - Just HOW MUCH YELLOW makes a Yellow M&M YELLOW. Seems to me you could put a Little, or you could put A LOT / And it would still present only as YELLOW...!
THE POINT being that on this "all inclusive and fully disclosing" M&M label, they list food dye and I am not sure how. They may even go to MORE DETAIL than soda makers, and actually list "Dye FD&C YELLOW #5". Again, HOW MUCH YELLOW? No not told. Now reading INTO the lable one step further, and THE REASON FOR FDA's EXISTENCE - The label DOES NOT State the TRUE CHEMICAL in the Yellow Dye - Which is "TARTRAZINE"..!!!! Now that don't "sound" too tasty does it...!!!
** INTERESTING FACTOIDZ (and possibly the REASON M&Ms actually lists the specific dyes):
- It was M&Ms in the 1970's which took the brunt of the public black eye with regard to the RED dye which was determined to be a carcinogen... They carried the entire political load almost as to removing this red dye from the market.
- The Red dye that became common and mainstream as replacement for red coloring is foods, IS MADE FROM ROACH WINGZ!!!!..

From the Wiki Info...:
Potential health effects on humans[edit]
Symptoms from tartrazine sensitivity can occur by either ingestion or cutaneous exposure to a substance containing tartrazine. Symptoms appear after periods of time ranging from minutes to 6 to 14 hours.[8]
Tartrazine appears to cause the most allergic and intolerance reactions of all the azo dyes, particularly among asthmatics and those with an aspirin intolerance.[9]
The mechanism of sensitivity is obscure and has been called pseudoallergic.[citation needed] The prevalence of tartrazine intolerance is estimated at roughly 360,000 Americans affected, less than 0.12% of the general population.[10] According to the FDA, tartrazine causes hives in fewer than 1 in 10,000 people, or 0.01%.[11]
It is not clear how many individuals are sensitive or intolerant to tartrazine, but the University of Guelph estimates that it is 1 to 10 out of every ten thousand people (0.01% to 0.1% of the population).[12] There is much controversy about whether tartrazine has ill effects on individuals who are not clearly intolerant.
Total avoidance is the most common way to deal with tartrazine sensitivity,[13] but progress has been made in reducing people’s tartrazine sensitivity in a study of people who are simultaneously sensitive to both aspirin and tartrazine.[14]
Hyperactivity in children[edit]
One study reported that a mixture of tartrazine, Ponceau 4R (E124), Sunset Yellow FCF (E110) - YES THE SAME and another "layer of the cake.." , carmoisine (E122), and sodium benzoate may cause hyperactivity in children,[16] but an independent review of the study concluded that the clinical significance of these observations remains unclear.[17] In addition, since mixtures and not individual additives were tested in this study, it is not possible to ascribe the observed effects to tartrazine.[17] Due to the high polarity of the tartrazine, it is unlikely to be able to cross the blood-brain barrier to produce a direct psychopharmacological effect. A 1994 study at the University of Melbourne suggested that children previously identified as hyperactive may exhibit an increase in irritability, restlessness, and sleep disturbance after ingesting tartrazine.[18]
Myths[edit]
Rumors began circulating about tartrazine in the 1990s regarding a link to its consumption and adverse effects on male potency, testicle and penis size, and sperm count. There are no documented cases supporting the claim tartrazine will shrink a man's penis or cause it to stop growing.[38][39]
*** So you also see that even "dye yellow #5" is just another DISGUISE to what lies beneath..!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunset_Yellow_FCF
Sunset Yellow FCF (also known as Orange Yellow S, FD&C Yellow 6 or C.I. 15985) is a synthetic yellow azodye with a pHdependent maximum absorption between 480 and 500 nm,[1]p.463 manufactured from aromatic hydrocarbons from petroleum
. When added to foods sold in Europe, it is denoted by E Number E110.[2] There are reports it can induce an allergic reaction.
- AND NOW YOU CAN SEE that you have to get to this LAYER OF INFORMATION before you can even discern that "Dye fd&c yellow no. 5" is a PETROLEUM BASED PRODUCT...!!! (at least readily delivered in written context)... And you wondered why the Oil & Gas industry thrives so well?? LOL..
Need I go deeper...?!
BACK ON TRACK...:
1. Just how harmful is yellow Dye?
2. Just how much "yellow" is either required or actually used to make an M&M YELLOW?!?
3. Just what else is it in?
4. But DOES M&M/Mars CONTROL the number of Yellow M&Ms in each packet??
It stands to logic that IF they controlled the number of yellow M&Ms in a packet, then they would also be controlling HOW MUCH YELLOW is used in a given M&M...! So then we would find out what their interest is. And is it to safely apply the MINIMUM Amount of Yellow to attain the "Pretty Color", OR is it to ellicit a biological response as "disguised arousal" and to gain product interest as "unknown response". Or is it to secretly jack up the children of the world and send them bat shit...! but the truth would be told if one were to look..
AND for all I really know. Perhaps M&Ms has discontinued use of this dye already and in the cause of well being of the world and good health.. So please, someone say "hey BBC, yur a moron - they don't use it any more" Please someone say it isn't so..!
- I believe the solution which the 5th grader used in his experiment was ONE teaspoon of Yellow Dye / per ONE cup of water. Don't recall for sure. It can readily be googled by those interested.
So "Whats in Your Wallet"...! LOL
