Emergency room - to go or not to go

Hypothetical question for you guys...

If you blew out a joint (knee, elbow, wrist etc) would you wait to go until covid settles down or would you risk it and go?

I would call your primary care doctor and firmly request that you'd like a referral to a specialist, the risk is much less at a specialist office and that's where the hospital is going to send you anyway after they get their money. In the unlikely event I go see a doctor, I refuse to go to my primary so they can say, "yep, you do need a specialist." I demand to have a referral faxed to whatever doctor I need, sometimes they'll even waive the referral if you contact directly or request the referral from your doctor themselves.

If the pain is cause for concern, I'd just go to the hospital and keep a safe distance from people and don't touch your face.

This is my area of expertise. I can tell you this....it depends which part of the country you live in. I work in a level 1 trauma center. If you don't have a life or death situation, you are sent away. And if by chance you are allowed in, nobody is allowed to come in with you for the duration of your stay.

Now, if you live in an area that has a low census, you may be granted access. They can stabilize you and refer you to an ortho or whomever.

If you live in or near any major city, call your primary or go to an urgent care.

Great question @ickyrica

Check with your medical insurance company, after all they run medical care anyway. All jokes aside, my insurance company does not require me to get a referral before going to a specialist. So I wouldn’t hesitate to go that route, so it’s always best to know your policy.

In this scenario with all this Corona shit flying around, the hospital is the last place I’d go with anything that’s considered non urgent. I’d do as @Eman referenced, call primary care and demand a referral. If they make you come in, go in there and be sure to cough every few seconds.
