Report: Ex-Canby police chief lied, withheld documents in Deason case

[SIZE=-1]An investigation by two retired Oregon law enforcement officers revealed a department where officers trying to conduct any meaningful inquiry of Deason's steroid abuse were thwarted by two chiefs, and the city administrator overseeing the department took the chiefs' word without strong oversight. [SIZE=-1]In 2001, a friend of Deason's second wife spoke with then-Sgt. Kroeplin by phone to report that Deason was using steroids and had vials of steroids and syringes. Kroeplin went directly to Deason to alert him. [/SIZE]

[SIZE=-1]Four years later, a Canby detective obtained information that Deason was buying steroids from William J. Traverso at his Canby Landscape Supply business. The detective said he wrote a report in January 2005 and gave it to former Chief Ken Pagano, who placed it in a folder in his desk. [...][/SIZE]

[SIZE=-1]Investigators found that no action was taken to determine whether Deason was fit for duty or whether steroids were the cause of his mood swings, outbursts and repeated domestic disturbances. [/SIZE]

[SIZE=-1]By August 2006, while Deason was living with Kroeplin, Oregon City's police chief alerted Kroeplin that one of his officers had information that Deason was seen buying steroids from an Oregon City man, while on duty and in uniform. The Oregon City police chief provided Kroeplin with the officer's detailed memo identifying the man who was seen selling steroids to Deason as Brian C. Jackson. [/SIZE]
