Had a meeting with the Colonel this morning to talk about my future. To make a long story short, I found out because of many different reasons, the USAF may not be a part of my future. So, no Combat Control for me I guess, damn it!!! However, I have some other options which opened up to me. I can either go to the Army or possibly the Marine Corps. I was dead set on going Spec Ops for the Air Force, but now that might not happen.

If anyone out there was or is an officer or enlisted member of the Army or Marine Corps, what do you think I should do? I am dead set on making the military a career and going infantry and/or special forces, its just that I dont know how to compare the two branches and their lifestyles. I guess it comes down to comparing Force Recon or Marine Corps Infantry to Army Rangers and Green Berets. If I could get some opinions, info, guidance from you guys I would really appreciate it. I guess God had a different plan for me than I originally thought. Thanks bros

AB, I was assigned to several Sf units during my 10+ year career (89-99) was in combat too. All I can advise you on is whatever deal the recruiters throw your way... make hime put it in writing! I waqs Commo 72E when I enlisted, I had the airborne option too. Went to Panama in 89, assigned to 7th SF Group. If your ASVABs are high enough, you should be able to get alot of offers...excelerated rank, bonus, schools. If you are single and willing to commit to the Green Berets there is no reason you cant get there. Dont worry about the urine tests, unless your freakishly huge, they wont look for AAS. Do your homework and get all deals in writing, thats the only way to confirm you'll get the schools you want.
Rangers Lead the way!
Good luck Bro

Alright, my situation is this.......I am in college on a federal contracted USAF scholarship awaiting commissioning as a 2Lt. I went and took the DoD physical for the USAF and my hearing is substandard. It may not be waiveable. If my hearing ends up not being waiveable, then I lose the contract, and I cannot stay in the USAF.....that was a stipulation I had to agree on in the contract. I talked with the the USAF, Army, Marine Corps commanders this morning and all told me if I end up getting fucked on the hearing, then the Army of Corps would be glad to take me because their physical requirements, especially hearing, are much different that the USAF's. So now I have to juggle around the idea of which branch I want to commission into. I am leaning toward the Army right now, but I have some time to think about it. I have to go in for my final evaluation next week in St. Louis and if I finf out I cant stay in the USAF, then I have to make a decision. I could just say to hell with the military, but the only reason I am in college is to become an officer. I really dont want to work as an engineer in the civilian world.

also, because of the route I am taking....the Officer route...i am not dealing with recruiters. I have to graduate college first (which wont be a problem) then take an assignment as an infantryman and then move on to Ranger school or force recon or which ever branch I decide to go. I would imagine I wont be dealing with contracts until commissioning time and that will be with my commander here. thanks for the advice fellas....keep it comin

Bro that just really fucking sucks for you, but anyway here it is, so you want special forces, Marine Corps was great to me, they feed me clothed me and gave me the power to kill, they will take you in a heart beat. when I got out about 1.5 years ago I was a SSGT (Staff Sergeant)
E-6 I was in the Corps for 10 years, loved every minut of it, but I must tell you we Marines play lots of fuck fuck games, meaning we play them for no reason, but then again any military plays them. we live like animals and dont have very much but that makes us better then most. As being recon myself I will not tell you about our training, that is something one must learn for them selfs but I can tell you its like something you never seen before broand you will regret ever trying it, but I will tell you about boot camp, 13 weeks of pure fucking hell, now dont get the wrong idea each branch has there traing for there missions, I do know some about ranger training, it sucks also, you will regret you are tring it, not sure what the drop rate is, here is another options for you, how about the navy seals?

Navy seals have a rough life also, shit if you can find out if you can rent a movie from history channel or discovery on nave seals traing its called BUDS, and the Marine Corps has a show on there basic training also. when the recruiter tells you something and you are unsure let me know bro, I can check on it for you, just to make sure you dont get fucked, go to the Marine Corps website, www.usmc.mil awsome information there.

if you want to go into SF, then in my humble opinion it doesnt matter much. SF carries a certain stigma with it. something cool. most regular folk dont know the difference between rangers, green berets, or force recon. but SF they understand.

if you dont give a flying backwards fuck what others think, which i hope you dont, then i cant help you much. i'm pretty sure Delta Force, which doesnt officially exist or not exist, takes from all branches....i think.

tough call for you to make. but as the others said, go wherever you get the better deal.

good luck.

have a nice day

we Marines play lots of fuck fuck games, meaning we play them for no reason,

there was just something on the history channel about SF. seems alot of the SF guys wind up leaving because of these "fuck fuck games". they train tremendously hard and never, for most of them, get to use their traing and actually go to battle. not even a skirmish. not even some little "wet job" that needed to get done.

just something to think about.

well I can say I have been there and done that! I love the History, they show lots of good stuff about the military!

ramboj...do you think that most SF's see action in one way or another, or do you think that most SF's just play the "fuck fuck game"?

First off, I think the Army is a great option. Second, while I don't doubt that you physically could accomplish everything you want to accomplish your hearing WILL come into play regarding Ranger school or SFAS (Special Forces Assesment and Selection) you may be able to attend RIP (Ranger Indoctrination Program) and be eligible for Ranger school, which keep in mind rank plays NO bearing on you while in school. Basically what I am saying is that unless things have changed you WILL be eligible for commissioning into the Army, no problems being an Infantry Lt., but keep in mind that for your first few years you may very well get a different branch detail. For example just because you get your blue cord and cross rifles does not guarantee you will go into an infantry battalion or serve as an infantry LT. or Captain.

In reference to SF, I can tell you that unless the qualifications have changed in the past few years your hearing will not allow you to be eligible to attend the Q course to be an 18A or in other words a SF officer.

I would be more than happy to talk to you more, and yes my advice is all coming from the experience of going through both Ranger school, and SFAS.

yep, the military's a bitch man. im still trying to work something out with the army. it's to the point where i don't even care about RIP or BCS because i know with my knee surgery they will never allow me to be Airborne qualified. Which sucks ass because that rules out all of the elite stuff, and i wanted those jump wings more than anything. but now im so sick of waking up everyday feeling like a piece of shit for never doing anything for my country, that im about willing to settle for the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) or just the regular Marines and being a regular old infantry grunt. oh well, shit happens.

personally bro, i'd go army just because you have more options that way. in the Marines its Force Recon or nothing if you want to be elite. the army has Rangers, Green Brerets, Delta Force, and, although not as elite as the previous mentioned, 82nd, 512th, and the 173rd, Airborne Divisions
