Grip width on flat and incline bench

On my flat bench I can use a wide grip almost to the collar but if I do that on incline my shoulders hurt like a mother no matter what amount of warming up I do.:eek: If I use a narrower placement a little wider than used for close grip presses it feels a lot more comfortable. Is it like this for other folks and does this indicate anything like maybe my shoulders are not as strong as could be?
