Help - Filtering

Hi there,

I know this might be stupid to some but I have a pretty basic question.

I need to transfer something from a sterile pack to a sterile vial. I want to filter it just in case.
What do I need to buy?

-Whatman Filter
-Filter holder?
-Syringe (5-10 ML type of thing) - Is this any type of Syringe with a twist lock?
-Needle or end to go on after the filter to get into the Sachet? is that like a twist lock thing?

Please help

Sterile .22 syringe filter, caulking gun, 30ml or 60ml syring, two 21 gauge needle, zip tie or duct tape, alcohol pad.
Draw up the contents in syringe remove needle, put syringe filter on syringe (luer lock), place in caulking gun (make sure there isnt more than 35ml or it wont fit in the caulking gun) duct tape or zip tie syringe in place with the filter on the outside of the caulking gun, wipe the top of the sterile vial down with the alcohol pad, put 21 gauge luer slip syringe on end of syring filter. Put a 25 gauge needle in the sterile vial to vent. Gently apply pressure to filter. Carrier oil will decide what filter membrane to use.

1 You need to make sure it's a 0.22 micrometers filter. 0.45 ain't enough and will allow bacteria to pass thru, while with smaller ones (i.e. 0.05, 0.01 um) filtration will be too slow.

2 For beginners, single use disposable filters are better

3 While there are reusable filter holders where the housing unscrews open

to replace just the membrane disc

they may be confusing at first for beginners.

4 10 ml syringes will work fine
but you'll need to fill them to like 12 ml
as you need to pour 10.5-11 ml in vials as to be able to effectively draw 10 ml of them.

5 the twist end is called Luer-Lok
it's standardized so all syringes, needles and filters fit perfectly.

6 you may need the caulk gun for a later time
as not to get confused as a beginner.

7 filtering WARM (not hot, not cold) brewed oil helps a lot.
About 100 F 40C is fine. Avoid too hot oil as it can damage the filters.

8 What kind of sterile pack are you using and why do you need it?

Just push it thru several layers of cheese cloth and you're GTG ;)

Yea I'm being facetious but my goodness what you seem to be suggesting appears to be much less than sterile.

Make sure you obtain advice from those who KNOW how to maintain a sterile end product.

Not the issue...

China order, UK order...
Just not having any good luck this year.
Different sources that do have a good track record.
