Help me out with a client: Sudden weight gain in lower leg.

Agreed, thanks! No heart conditions as far as I know. He seems to have a creatinine score, but no BUN or eGFR.

Thank you for being aware of his body changes and taking the time to investigate.

When an otherwise healthy, active person "suddenly has 1 leg swelling" it may indicate a serious health condition or serious response from the body after introducing new drugs/medications combined with new lifestyle activities. The body is outwardly displaying a sign of distress or malfunction when only one leg is swelling suddenly.

I am not a doctor but I have graduated from medical massage therapy school, and one of the main "red flags" when charting a client's health before a massage session, is if they have sudden onset of edema in their body, the legs, and especially just one leg.

We would have to decline any massage work and strongly suggest to see a doctor ASAP.

Something with the blood flow (venous return) seems to be off or out of balance and that typically involves the heart. Please encourage your client to get checked by a doctor with the information that the swelling has been sudden in one leg.

I was on this track too. I always suspect heart failure in cases of pedal/lower extremity edema, usually before even thinking about kidneys. A lot of the guys here are probably better informed than me on the topic but a basic 12 lead and echo couldn’t hurt to rule out cardiac involvement.
If it’s localized and unilateral edema with no other symptoms of cardiac involvement (ie sob, pitting edema, fatigue, persistent cough/wheezing, etc) I would doubt it’s heart failure. I would go to urgent care or ED and have checked out immediately to rule out dvt. Better to be safe.

cardiac/tele RN for 8 years.

Fair, that makes sense. Mad respect at the credentials btw, hoping to join you one day. Just the journey to becoming a half assed medic is wearing me out atm lol.

Thanks. I am not a medical doctor either...I have a PhD so I can read medical literature, but this issue is way out of my area of expertise.

The thing is...he ran test and GH for 5 months w/ no problems. 4 months ago he added 150 mgs of deca/week for 10 weeks then switched over to 180 mgs of primo/week. I think it was 4 months ago when he bumped his test up to 250 mgs/week (from 200).

Then suddenly, last week out of no where came the leg swelling. The labs he sent me did not contain any Kidney labs, but he did tell me his creatinine was elevated....and he is taking creatine, 10 grams/ day. I told him to drop the creatine. He has dropped his test way down and has stopped GH for about 4 days now. His estrogen is also slightly elevated and he is taking no AI.

He says the swelling is reduced. Nonetheless, I still urged him to see a medical doc and get Bun and eGFR (kidney) labs.

If it's just one leg, please have them get an ultrasound it could be clotting (been there scary shit).

My personal experience is this. I respond well to lower dose HGH, experimenting mostly with 1-3 iu per day or most days for overall health, pump, fat loss, (sometimes am sometimes pm but mostly prefer am fasted pre workout these days). A few times on let's get bigger blasts I messed with 8iu per day. Gains and body changes much more amplified, but so was water retention and increased BP, so bac to lower levels I usually go.

That all said, no matter what I use, I get water retention and edema from HGH. ALL HGH. Swollen ankles and fingers and feet and face mostly. I generally use quality tested generic brand I believe in, but even splurged for a 5 pack of Pfizer pens this past 6 months to test if any difference in that regard. Even pharma HGH I retain water very badly!

So, I simply added in 12.5mg HCTZ to my already daily BP supps, Telmisartan (40mg) and Nebivolol (2.5mg). Woila all water retention edema even w hen on HGH gone. I noticed it really helped stabilize at an even sliglthy lower than usual level, my BP levels as well. For me, I see no reason to not run it, for now, oh HGH or not (I'm usually on it).

Important to note that if this person already does have kidney issues, introducing HCTZ even at a lower dose, may not be of any benefit, and could in fact do more harm than good.
