how old is old enough to train?

my son is 11 years old and a certified scuba diver. Is he old enough to start training with weights?

I've seen guys in my gym with kids at least 9 years old under the squat rack. I say that's a little young and just premature stress on the bones. I would agree after the age of 10 it would be good to get one aqquanted with the weight room. Teach him proper form, technique, and the basic concept of sets and reps.

consider whole body exercises and body weight exercises. Gymnasts train this way and very young. Pound for pound, gymnasts are probably the strongest people on the planet.

I found this the other day

YOUTH RESISTANCE TRAINING: UPDATED POSITION
STATEMENT PAPER FROM THE NATIONAL STRENGTH
AND CONDITIONING ASSOCIATION

I'd wait till he gets into High school, his body is still developing and you don't want that much stress on his frame. Cardiovasular movements and training would be fine. Sit up's push up should not be a problem either.

too much heavy weight resistance training will stunt his growth. squats and dead lifts especially.
