Joining the Navy

So I plan on joining the navy after my rehab from my upcoming surgery and I'm wondering if anybody that has experience in the navy or military in general can give me an idea of what I'm going to be getting myself into as far as basic is concerned. I've started running 2 miles every other day, because I'm not a runner, just so I can start to build endurance. Now I can't start swimming or doing push-ups and sit-ups until after my surgery. I'm thinking if I sign in May I won'[t be leaving until anywhere between august and october, so I plan on lifting again but running 2-3 miles a day whenever I can get to that, and swimming everyday along with done a large amount of push ups and sit ups. I'm trying to either do SEAL or SWCC if anybody is familiar with those. So if anybody can give em an idea of what I can do now to start preparing that would be great. Also, please share any experiences you had going through basic whether they're good or bad, because I know I'm going to have to mentally prepare for a lot. Thank you in advance for any advice you give me. it's greatly appreciated.

With any military trade mental > physical in terms of difficulty. My trade is Infantry in the Cdn Forces. I have no clue what Basic is like in the US, especially with NAVY. Basic can be VERY hard for people, the reason is because of the transition from civilian lifestyle to military lifestyle, its very different and don't expect to get away with anything, they will give you shit for almost everything you do, this is where the discipline training comes in effect, so just shut your brain off when they say stuff and do what they say.

I know/trained with US SEALS, this is veryyy mentally and physically demanding..

Physical Strength is a MUST. Mental Strenth is a MUST.

Military is NOT for everyone. Especially, military base trades.... i.e (Infantry/Armour/Arty)

Anyway, I love it, Im not stuck behind a desk my whole life, learn new things basically everyday, many promotions, job beyond ordinary ...etc.

Anyway, its just a matter of giving it a shot. I hope to be JTF very soon, if i were you i wouldnt go NAVY[:o)] but thats my opinion.

I'm doing Navy because it caught my interest more than anything else, why would you say not to go navy? I'm just curious. How is the transition? I've been told the hardest part of it is the mental side of everything. Physically I can push myself beyond my limits, I've done it before i can do it again. I guess I'm kind of curious as to how mentally tough training is.

i dont know about navy. but im after going a month in the field/ (woods) with maybe 10 nights of sleep. not ur full 8 hrs, like 4 hrs. both winter and summer and canadian winters are mad. And thats not even bad. Its very hard to explain, you have to do it to see.

And what do you mean youve pushed yourself to the limits you can do it again?

for ex. making you dig a trench all night, as soon as your done "were moving", you fill your trench pick up your machine gun/amo/grenades/shovels....ruck 12km to a different position its like a 70 PLUS lbs bookbag, dig your trench ..."intelligence was wrong the enemy is in this position, were doing an ambush" fill your trench pick up your shit move to a postion conduct an ambush.. set up a defensive to prepare for a counter... etc. This is on no sleep. Its training that prepares you for war. Well thats how the infantry trains. Not so much anymore, we do a lot of urban ops and things like this due to the war in afganistan.. the guys you see storming the buildings are infantry.

Im not sure how to explain, its just not for everyone. Give it a shot and then you will know.
AGAIN I dont know how NAVY conducts training so I dont know the intensity of it.........

BTW not telling you not to go navy man, I just wouldnt cause I like to shoot weapons and all that shit. Thats just me. to everyone there own.

Yea that sounds extremely rough, and I've never been put into a situation like that but I'm willing to do anything to be my best. I want to do special forces, I don't want to sit on a ship like most people in the navy, I want to do some type of fighting, and I'm wiling to push myself as hard and as far as I can. It's just I'm a very highly motivated person and when I put my mind to something I do it. I'm not doing it for a so called "free ride" like some kids I heard do it for, like paying for my education, no I want to fight. I'm ready to do something a lot more fulfilling with my life instead of being a college kid. I'm not worried about the physical aspect of it its just adapting to the change in lifestyle like you said. I'm going in there not really knowing what to expect except that they are going to mentally break me down and rebuild me to how they want. I'm not afraid, I won't let myself be. Like I'm just trying to mentally prepare myself you know?

You'll be fine. You seem to have a great attitude. Keep it up, Im sure you will do great with that kind of motivation. When you train, you always wonder "why the fuck am i doing this" until you go overseas, and then finally understand this is what I prepared for, this is why I did this... etc.

BTW the army isnt always like this, a lot of the times its like a 9-5 job, just to let you know. cheers man

Thanks man i appreciate your support, I'll be sure to keep you updated about how training down here is [:o)]

AG,I am proud of you..the military is a great way to go ! take full advantage of the college courses they will pay for when you are in.You must test high on asvab sp? to get special ops positions..get idiots guide to asvab and STUDY ! Also online help to find study materials.Navy is good choice..you can take college courses/hours while on ship ! Marines have special ops that is CRAZY..you do ranger, seal, and marine programs to become a real bad ass but again you must score 74 or higher on the test. You can re take the test every 30 days I think.Basic will be a breeze for you..just get real good now at cardio..forget lifting heavy ass weights. The practice asvab test the recruiter will give you is very easy..the real test is not..BE PREPARED! The marines have a program for guys who score high for officer training..your job is to actually go to college 2-4 years..they pay for everything and give you paycheck..then you give them yourself as an officer. If you can pass background check with flying colors you will get special clearances no one else will have! then you can come out and go into dea/fbi..or alternates.Dont forget the 80 k for GI bill that you can now pass on to your kids !!!Look for jobs with sign on bonus's and get in writing your job gauranteed before you sign on the dotted line...you might say i know a little about this subject:cool:

Thanks Dennis I really appreciate it! I was actually thinking about going FBI when I get out too, even if I decide to stay in for 20 years and retire, I'll get pension and I'll have a job. So there are books for the asvab test? I only scored a 69 on my practice one, which I was highly disappointed about, still better than average, but not good enough. And as far as working out do you think i should be doing more endurance workouts, or can I do mass gaining workouts like I'm used to doing? I want to gain my size and strength back, but I want to be training in running and swimming also, and I'll be doing a lot of push ups and sit ups too. I read somewhere that to get into SWCC you have to get a AR+WK=104, MC=50 or higher on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), I'm kind of confused about that, like do I have to score a 105 on my asvab test? Or is it something else? And if you could give me a heads up as to how I should be training for basic that would be awesome too. I mean I won't be able to do any lifting for the next few months since I'm getting surgery next week. Any insight you can give me would be greatly appreciated man.

Ag the pre test asvab they give you on computer is VERY EASY,the real one is much more difficult. The recruiter gives you fake easy version to get you hooked..then you take the real deal on the same day you swear in..trust me it is hard..a 74 score will get you anywhere you want to go.Get idiots guide to asvab and use internet to study.Once you are sworn in the asvab score goes away and does not mean anything at all..they just use it to place you.Once at school for your job description those test scores will matter.Forget heavy weight training for now.You can go back to it later/High rep lighter weights, cardio, core work, endurance is what you need.Keep height /weight in proportion and keep body fat % down.eat lean and healthy, use sensible carbs for energy.I can get you good contact inside fbi/dea later after you excell in military. How many college hours do you have? What is your inury? What is your criminal history if any???

I have over 100 hours in school, the recruiter told me that I don't have to graduate to get in because at over 100 credit hours I'll go in as E-3 which is the highest I can get in as anyways. I tore my labrum in my left shoulder, and I'm having surgery done next week. Its a pretty serious surgery, but my doctor said that I'll have a full recovery, as long as I don't try o push myself which I don't plan on doing. And my only criminal history is a misdemeanor for when i sold alcohol to an underage kid that had proper ID while I was bar tending over a year ago, and I'm already off probation and everything. I have been looking into books to buy, because next semester which will probably be my last semester in class here I'm going to be focusing on training, and studying for the asvab. I really want to do special forces more than anything.

Yessssss, good advice Dennis!... take all advantages of the military then go S.W.A.T and make some real money! Im going ERT very soon! Emergency Response Team (canadian version of US Swat).

You get so much respect from others from doing stuff like this its insane. plus loving your career is what its all about everything else will just fall in place after that!

BTW criminal records dont matter to a point. Depending what you did. I got charger with assault, and this is while i was in. plus police work, they know noone is an angel, as long as they know you have changed your goood to go.

That's really what I would like to do is go SWAT once I'm out. And I know that money is a big part of things but I'm more excited to go do something that I like to do. I've seen some videos on ERT, those guys are bad asses man, good luck!

The worst thing you could do right now is getting in any trouble..avoid fights or anything else stupid..keep your nose clean.

Yea I'm making sure I'm staying out of trouble, i just got off probation so I'm not trying to deal with courts again. The recruiters told me that my misdemeanor wouldn't be a big deal anyways since I was kind of screwed given the situation.

Wow good for you...and Dennis is right...endurance is the key. My brother in law is a Seal and from what he told me the training is one of the most brutal you can go thru. He also said that they pick who will be offered the training-so it wasnt an option for everyone. He went through his training 20 years ago though so things may very well have changed. He said one of the hardest parts of the Seals training was a water treading with full gear on in cold as shit water for nearly 72 hours (days and thru the nights) that was what knocked most of the trainees out. But like i said this was 2 decades ago so training may have changed. My sis is a Marine and i lived in HI for a spell so i got to see all the branches and how they are treated. Hickam AF, Kaneohe Marine, Pearl Harbor Navy, Schofield army. AF was treated the best, navy has the worst blues (no offense navy men and women) didnt see much army out there though...and marines had it the worst but had the biggest ego--well deserved I may add.
Best of luck to you though.

I am a Navy seal my self and things get can get really fucked up. You have to increase your aerobic capacity as much as possible and strengthen your body. I recommend doing a 5x5 routine and also do thousands of push-ups until you get there. I hope you're a good swimmer. One good thing to keep in mind is that no matter how good you're psysically prepared, if you're not mentally ready you ain't gonna go far.

Before you go think about it twice. I have ended up with a fucked up lower back and knees and most of the other guys got even worse injuries. Failure is a great possibility as well. It pays well but living it is far worse than just thinking, "damn, these guys go through a lot of tough shit but i think i can do it".
