Knee Pain - Need some Advice

You need to get it looked at to determine exactly what is going on Marcus. I rarely have any knee pain pulling and when i do it is always after a rare (for me) higher volume dead session.

I concur with Doc on the voodoo floss. I will need a right knee replacement in 3 to 5 years but with the help of synvisc knee injections, voodoo floss and a pretty conservative training plan I am able to squat regularly.

Just going to co-sign with everyone else, go see a DR and get it checked out. intitally, i was going to tell you to roll the bottom of your foot out everyday with a steel pipe or something of the like. But i think this is more severe than the knee issue i was having a couple months back. i could still squat and deadlift without knee pain. it was the day after my knee would hurt. Coach told me to roll my feet out daily and pain went away a couple days later.

moral of the story, and what my coach told me, sometime we need to look upstream and downstream from the problem to find the solution. But to me, this clearly sounds like something is directly wrong with your knee.

have you tried doing hack squats or maybe trap bar deads?

I haven't... was even hurting with leg extensions last night. I will say a little less after I left so maybe it just needs some stretching after endorphins have kicked in. I'll try a trap bar and hack tomorrow when I'm there just to see what it feels like, and report back

Be careful with leg extensions... My physical therapist basically forbid me from using them. I thought it would be a good rehab type thing to go light with. He said it was way too hard on knees if you're having problems

Leg extensions are horrible for knee rehabbing. Much of the stress of the weight is placed right on the knee.

Without knowing what the injury really is, it's tough to give advice on fixing it and workarounds. Try the voodoo floss asap but get in and see a sports doc. Could be simple tendinitis and like ProdigalSon said, the symptoms show up or down stream or it could be something significantly more serious, which I hope it's not).

Ok, so ok 9th day without leg movements... I mean some hamstring curls and mobility stuff with no weight recently but that's it.

Had a massage tonight from medical masseuse girl who I go to and she worked on my knees and legs for 40 min. Got home and did a little mobility with voodoo floss for just a couple min for the first time.

At this moment, I can say it's feeling better than a week and a half ago which is good, but I expected a big difference by now considering time off.

Those who use the floss... do you use it daily whether your knees are giving you trouble or not? Before or just after workouts?

Having been through knee surgery I can tell you the worst approach is to look for advice on the internet, I thought mine was tendonitis, bursitis, some whatever named syndrome, torn meniscus, incorrect knee cap alignment and in fact it appeared to be synovitis. As the knee is in use on a daily basis you can't really ignore movements that aggravate it and relying on "time" won't really heal it up. Find the cause then proceed, from what I read at least it seems to be in the patella or femoral or tibial region that is at least not of the worst kind you could have. Also 9 days is nothing for a joint like the knee, wrist injuries can take more than a week to heal what comes for a joint much bigger and under heavier load daily. Using the voodoo floss can help definitely if it's an inflammation you can try foam rolling the nearby tissue I had a terrible case of shin splints that I took care of by foam rolling my calves even if the pain was on the opposite side of the leg completely, using pain as a guide is not always the best method to find the issue point. Also look for stretches if it is an alignment issue, I had ITBS at 1 point which I healed with the power of youtube (not recommended). And remember "a couple min" is nothing for mobility and stretching like "a couple of sets" is nothing for hypertrophy, you have to put in the effort in everything if you want results, I hope you heal up soon

Had very similar anterior knee pain.....directly under the patella. Several reasons but the most common is patellar-femoral syndrome in which the patella engages and 'slides' abnormally over the distal femur during flexion. There was a time when orthopods would perform a lateral release of the patella so that it would engage the femur more freely. That practice has lost favor over the years except is extreme cases. The main reason I had this years ago was because of road racing and over development of my quad. lateralis relative to the medialis. For me seated extensions with emphasis on the medialis (slight external rotation at the top of the movement) was key. Also received steroid injection (methylprednisolone 80mg IA) followed by 10 days meloxicam 15, 1/d to stop the inflammatory cycle. On the subject you brought up. I believe squats are the 'meat and potatoes' of leg work. Maybe not 100% of the time but at least 70% of the time....IMO. Get healthy then slowly work in the squat. Also, might be worth investing in lifting shoes for both your squat and dead work. Good luck
