knee pain

for about the last 6 months or so i have had knee pain. its is across the top part of the patella. generally it was only when squatting, but now they hurt pretty bad most of the time. i went to the doctor and he said that the inner thigh muscle (whatever that one is called) is too big for the outer ones and is pulling my patella across. so it is not sliding properly in the groove it should but grinding up the side. of course the doctors solution was 'stop weight training' but that is a stupid idea. just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems. also any advice on how i can train my legs to reverse this problem would be appreciated.

I have the exact same problem...my doc just gave me some anti-inflammatory and set me up for some physical therapy...I told him I would not stop doing squats, so he said to cut back from something else, so I quit doing running movements for cardio and that helped a lot, my knee used to hurt all the time and now it rarely does...I also warm up really slow with squats (135#, 185#, 225#, 275#, 315#...etc) it's kind of weird with 135 because it hardly feels like there's anything there, but I usually do 15-20 deep reps and my knee usually doesn't hurt after that, also be sure that your knees do not go past the plane of your toes (use good form :) )...also, use deca in your cycles, I don't have any knee pain with deca

No real advice as I suffer from various knee & back pains, sometimes so bad I can't sleep let alone squat. My doctor told me I was just old and paying the price for so many years of "excessive abuses" or, as we call it, lifting. (needless to say I'm looking for a new doctor) Just be very strict with your form and don't be afraid to back off the weight a bit or add warm ups if that helps.

if i was able to build the outer thigh muscle i should be able to correct this problem. what are the best excercices to do to hit this/these group of muscle/s?

your dr isnt to informed..for patella problems squats are recommended..the other thing no one asked how is your form?are you sitting in the hole or are your knees going over your toes..stopping at or above parallel will put more stress on your knees than going ass to floor..if your form is good i would try out knee wraps..ive had a bum knee (surgery) since i was 15..ive squatted off and on but now that i have my form worked out ive got no problems..315 and higher i wrap both knees

I would also suggest the physical therapy, and knee wraps, but also going to see a good orthapedic surgeon, rather than a regular physician b/c I had ACL surgery 6 yrs ago, and i've had on and off knee pains for years.

thanks for the advice guys. however if what the doctor says is true, then theoretically knee wraps would aggravate the problem. they will only increase the pressure of the patella on the knee bone. i have never tried knee wraps so i can not prove this argument. i am gonna buy some and will let you know.
