Knee pain??

Hello Meso!

So about 6 months ago, i was sprinting down the hall (for no reason) and then i stepped wrong, which caused a very weird pain, but it wasn't bad. Then i noticed if i'm standing and try to squat down, my left knee, the one i hurt, has this sharp pain. So basically it only hurts if I put my weight on it and i bend it. I decided not to go to a doctor, and it did stop hurting after a week! But then after I do my leg extensions on the machine, only if i go over 100 pounds, It'll start hurting again for a week. That sharp pain is only there if i have weight on it and i'm bending it. It doesn't hurt when If i'm sitting down, or standing up and moving it through the full range of motion without weight on it.

I've never had pain from doing leg extensions before the injury, even when lifting way heavier. I don't get knee pain if I do leg extensions using 100 lbs, but if i go over that, like to 120lbs- This is still VERY easy to me (4x10), my knee will have a sharp pain when I squat down, with just my body weight; Lasts for about a week. I haven't had this knee pain in like a few months, since i've just been lifting 100lbs with leg extensions. But recently, I thought maybe my knee has recovered so I went up to 120.. Then BAM! Knee pain again :(

My knee doesn't hurt when I squat, leg press, leg curls, deadlifts, etc. Not even leg extensions, unless I do heavy weight with it, but it doesn't hurt right away. Usually starts hurting the day after. I've maybe missed one week of legs, since the injury; 6 months. So I don't think it's from lack of exercise, or muscle imbalance, as I train virtually EVERY part of my body. For my legs, I do squats, leg press, leg extensions, leg curls, calf raises, leg abduction, and leg adduction. Then on a separate day I'll do box jumps, dead lifts, and cleans to front squats.

Anyone ideas on what this may be?

Leg extensions produce a sheering force on the knee you don't get much of naturally. You could have some articular cartilage damage at the edges that only gets compressed with leg extensions.

I have lots of articular damage at the edges in both knees, and I can't do leg extensions at all, even with light weight. If that's what it is, it's not something you can work through. Ignoring the pain will make it worse over time. Leg press with feet together is a pretty good substitute IMO.

Might have a tear on any one of the ligaments on knee. If its weak call the doc you can't ignore your knee.i did ignore the signs and tore my meniscus. Now surgery and long rehab :(

Thank you both for your input! This WILL help me tremendously to avoid future injuries! And I'm very sorry to hear about your problems.

I guess no more leg extensions for me :(
But i'm glad you found a effective substitute for us!

I don't believe it's a torn ligament, as the pain ONLY occurs after leg extensions. And i'm not experiencing any kind of weakness. If you're still in rehabilitation, I wish you a fast and speedy recovery!

I hope you guys have a wonderful day! Thanks again!
