any other opinions before i buy this one?

i started a thread on this topic about a month ago...but i'll highlight my needs for a good knife.

i'm heading into the wilderness for a few days. i'll be armed, legally, and i'm looking for a good knife as an extremely last ditch protective type thing. after i unload all my bullets in his ass :) . theres bears in them thar woods, and i'm looking for a strong knife that, again, in a last ditch effort would cause some damage to a bear as he's chewing on my ass.

have a nice day

if your looking for that kind of knife-check out these by Ka-bar:

https://www.kabar.com/product_search.jsp?categoryId=1&mode=category

personally i carry 2. a small Coldsteel pocketknife. and the other is the Crkt M16-13T. The "T" is for titanium. the standard m16 series use aluminum. they are available in a variety of styles depending on what they are for. Military, Law Enforcement, Work etc.

heres the Titanium version:

Military:

Fire Dept:

Law Enforcement:

Special Forces:

Carson Desert M16's

These are cool:

Also very nice:

More quality knives from benchmade:

http://www.benchmade.com/products/product_detail.asp?model=140

Kershaw is also another Highest quality company. check out some of theirs:

http://www.kershawknives.com/web2/p11.htm

Leeks and Chives feature a spring action for VERY fast auto opening:

http://www.kershawknives.com/web2/p5.htm

Coldsteel, as posted above-is another stellar knife company.

Go with a knife from a company such as those four. tolerances, and materials used make the difference-especially the blade.

Youll see on the benchmade site the knives they have are a little pricey-but just do searches on ebay with the manufacturers#'s and youll find some good deals.

oh yeah-and your knife is only as good as its edge. Get a badass angle sharpener like this one

http://www.spyderco.com/online_product_info.asp?sts=3%2F14%2F2004+9%3A27%3A19+PM&pfid=204MF&deptId=1030&mscssid=CE938JNGH0WB8GHA0X1T06N2U761E2J4

sharpen the knife in a downward, sliding toward you movement, being careful to not slide the knife all the way off the stone-as that will dull the tip. Sharpen one side til it forms a ridge-a "burr" on the opposite side. To check for a burr on the blade-drag the side opposite from which you were sharpening across your fingernail-if it digs and scrapes white dust onto the blade then youve got a good burr. Then make a couple passes on the burr side to remove it. start with the courser stones-then move to the finer ones. Once youve got it down-youll get an edge that is literally razor sharp. For this reason i carry two knives. One small pocket knife for cutting chores, and the other stays razor-sharp, hair-shaving capable, that will cut someone like a fresh scapel. while your fine tuning the edge-keep a small notepad around. tear off a sheet of thin paper. if you can hold the paper with one hand, and slice it with your knife using light pressure-without the paper bending or crumpling in anyway-a clean perfect slice-then your getting somewhere.

DAMN....back to the drawing board!!!

thanks for the input. nice folders, but i want a fixed blade, like the benchmade, with a blade from 6-7". what is your opinion of the knife that i posted?

have a nice day

looks like its probably more durable than youll ever need. but i dont know what the blade is made of. it might be a bitch to sharpen-and may not hold an edge very well.

what about this one?

http://www.crkt.com/prohuntr.html

that one is gorgeous-let me see if i can find what they run for on ebay....

i think joes lookin for a pretty large fixed blade...definitely check the kershaw..CRKT , and benchmade

kwik the little kershaw leek , with spring assist is a sweet mutha, i got it and the vapor, also love the CRKT knives, i get a greatdeal on them too

Joe Shmoe - I would not recommend the knife you linked to. The scales (grip) are wood, and they don't appear to be treated with epoxy or resin. They are "riveted" on with brass "rivets" They will split and come loose. The knife is pretty heavy at 1lb 7oz and believe it or not it would be difficult to get good penetration with that blade design. That knife would be a good deal at $25 not $65. For your concerns the best bet would be one of the Ka-Bar designs. Economical and durable and easy to puncture with. Just my .02

i love the vapor! i was choosing between the crkt m16-13t and the vapor-and went with the crkt, but now i want a vapor too. but i love this knife-i think i might have to get one:

joe...if your wanting a knife to use in the wild,i would suggest one that has a serated-type saw edge on the top of the blade....

Joe, of course you do know that it is very unlikely that bears will attack you. I can't give you the stats of the top of my head, but I suspect that they are about equivalent to lightning strikes.;)

and its also highly unlikey youll do the bear much damage with a knife, considering you couldnt kill him with a rifle...lol

yep..i realize that. but with my luck, i'll get hit by lightening twice and have a bear nibbling at my toes :). i just like to be prepared for the absolute worse. for instance, i have enough arimi to last for 2 cycles. and i'm "off" right now ;) .

this is very true. but again, worst case scenario...if i dont stop him with the rifle, atleast i'll hurt him a bit as he's trying to eat my pancreas  .

thanks for the info gents. when i settle on a different one, i'll ask again.

have a nice day

i have a cuda tanto style folder for everyday use and a ww2 issue cattaraugus combat knife for special occasions.
