Lifting Belts

How much should I use a lifting belt? I am doing stronglifts 5x5 and am a way off failure so tend not to use a belt just yet. I figure once I start to get heavier I will use one mainly during the working sets but not during warm up. Opinions?

I agree. I use my belt only during my work sets. Btw I have done strong lifts a while back and really enjoyed it... Good luck!

I use a belt when I go above 85% of my 1 RM on squats and deads. Only other movements I use one on is heavy bent rows and farmers carries.

I don't use them for farmers carries but I guess when I get heavier I will. How do you do your fcs? I do 3 sets of 1min only because I read it somewhere.

Right now I'm working up from 35 to 50 yards per trip for 4 trips with a brief rest between each carry. When I get up to 50 yards I increase the weight. Currently doing 140 pds. per hand, last time was 40 yards per trip, tomorrow will be 45 yards per trip.

I don't use them at all anymore as odd as it sounds I feel safer without them. I used to use them before. I got into a car accident and herniated my back. During recovery getting back into lifting I constantly hurt my back again wearing belt I felt I could probably gauge how I felt. So I never use them now just feel safer. Lifts are almost where they used to be from before the accident except Squats.

My gym is too small to be doing distance I basically walk around in circles in the space I have. I have been trying for 1min and when I reach it on each set I increase weight. Sounds better the way you do them. I might start at 45sec each set and once I reach a min on each increase.

I do them in my driveway at home and have the distances measured off. It works pretty well except when it is pouring down rain like it was today.

I know you do PL'ing so I'd like to see what you think about using a belt for benching and overhead pressing???

Currently I'm battling some significant forearm/elbow pain which has impacted my bench and press and forced me to leave some weight behind on those lifts. When I'm fully healthy I find the belt can help in these two lifts to some degree. I don't normally wear a belt for pressing work but just wanted to hear someone else's thoughts.

I use a slight split stance on overhead press and I find I don't have to but when I used to do normal stance I did. Alternate which foot is forward each set.

I do more military than anything. Never did split stance OHP. Like I said, I don't habitually use belts for pressing motions since those are my weakest lifts but I have on a few occasions and did notice a difference. Now if I didn't make sure to really get a belly full of air and concentrate on the Valsalva the belt would hinder me but not when I made sure to get as much air as possible.

Doc, I use a belt on heavy OHP's but I haven't been doing them lately. I don't use a belt benching, not really opposed to it but I don't get any benefit out of it.

Agree with everything, use belt only when going close to 1 RM for reps (like 90% etc.) or setting a new PR. I am not using a belt on OHP but I think I could benefit from one because I often go last set push pressing. Belt on low bar squats can be used before going all out I think for a precaution.
