Hey folks,
So I'm an endurance athlete (who also lifts, ex-bber), and lately, I've been commuting to work by bike, in order to increase my cycling volume while trying to keep the impact on family life as low as possible.
For work, I also sometimes take Modafinil. I have noticed that on days when I take modafinil, I can hammer out my entire commute at functional threshold power relatively comfortably. (My commute is about an hour both ways, sometimes I extend the route to add more mileage).
For those not familiar with FTP power, it's normally something that would feel like agony, especially after 15 minutes or so when fatigue starts building. So the fact that I can easily hold that power for extended periods without feeling the "suffering" is quite remarkable.
It's not like I'm setting power numbers never achieved before, it's more like what I know I can do just feels "easier" and more comfortable.
I would imagine it would be quite a powerful drug for race day. (It is on the WADA list, so beware if you are going to try!)
Has anyone had a similar experience?
I think it could be a powerful tool during training to do longer harder sessions which would ultimately lead to better adaptions. (I assume). I do wonder about the potential dangers, blood pressure, elevated HR, etc.
Does anyone have any views on this?
