Could someone give me some new ideas to shock my calves...what movements/combos have you guys used with success? even when I can dunk really well, they don't get very big...thanks

Try doing a lot of supersets and drop sets... with very heavy weight. Try not to rest in between, and you'll really feel the burn and pain. If your calf cant grow from that, then I dont know.

Calves are just like any other muscle, so train them accordingly. High weight, low reps and also do big movements like deadlifts and squats.

Also, we you are doing a calf movement, make sure you are getting a full stretch and a full contraction. Many people short stroke on their calf raises. Make sure you heel goes all the way down and when you come up feel yourself squeeze the calf as hard as you can. If you use enough weight and do quality reps, you will soon see the results you are looking for.

thanks for the replies guys...I think I will try the drop sets, I already do everything else mentioned...especially the deads, which are probably my favorite lift...

A few months ago, a friend of mine suggested the following to add size to my calves: Using the seated leg press machine - use high weights, and immediately follow that set with standing calf raises on a step (bodyweight only). When doing the calf extensions on the leg press machine, make sure not to bend your knees and focus on full range of motion/stretch. Repeat this several times with very little or no rest time between sets. I add considerable weight to each set. I generally do 4-5 compound sets, usually 10 reps (to exhaustion). Over the past few months, with one calf workout each week, I've been able to add size. Hope this helps.

You are limited by your genetics. (even with chemical enhancement) If you come from a line of small calves, then you have little to work with. I went to grad school with a guy that never did calves and they were probably 18" or 19" Calf muscles are as much as 3x the density of your pecs or bis. Its not impossible to get them up, but it will be difficult.
A buddy of mine and I poke fun at ourselves about little calfs. "Hey, Doc 'so and so' is having a 2 for 1 calve implant special, need to jump on it"

let us know how it goes
