I mean GEEK in a good way. I was at my mothers house trying to install windows 2000 over windows millenium and there wasn't enough space on her 2gb harddrive,so now i'm stuck between booting windows and not having enough space to continue. I need to know how to clear the hardrive externally, since i can't get into programs,so i can have enough space to install the new windows. thanks

you need to boot up with a diskette (if you don't have a boot disk you can do an internet search and download one or get the info on how to create one) and format the drive. this will erase the contents of the drive and then you can proceed with the install.

or you can boot up millenium (which sucks as an os) and manually delete files thereby clearing up some drive space. but either way you want to get rid of the millenium piece of crap.

Well, like i said,i am stuck. I can't even boot up Mill, otherwise,i would erase more and make more room. I want to format the drive, but i don't know how.

good site vegas. 'whore, once you create the disk it's a piece of cake to boot up with it and format the drive. then you'll be starting with a clean slate.

So what am i booting? Windows ME or 2000? I don't know what you mean by creating a boot disk. What am i going to do with it. O ok got ya. So,i will copy the info from my comp onto a cd and then bring to me madras install it and format her harddrive(that's sick). thanks

I haven't dealt with Win2K in quite a long time, however if it is the same as WinXP, you can do everything through the CD and don't need any boot disks
I don't know how experienced you are with computers.....so I'll explain everything.
First step, turn the computer on and enter the BIOS, usually just keep hitting the DELETE, or F2 key during setup
Go into the boot sequence and make the CD drive the first boot device
Hit F8, save changes and exit the BIOS
Restart the computer with the CD in the drive
When the computer comes on it will say hit any key to boot from CD
Unless your Homer Simpson, you won't look for the "ANY" key, so just hit a couple keys on the keyboard and the computer will boot up into the WIN2K setup
Once in setup you can go through the regular installation process
You will eventually come to a screen where it say what partition do you want to install on, and you basically pick the C drive or whatever it is and then delete this patition, then create a new one, and format this partition.
After the format, you can do the installation on this partition and it should go smoothly

My suggestion is to get a new HD anywhere. A 2gig is pretty damn small, and you could prob get a 10 gig for about $40......I'd also suggest using Windows XP too, much better for a basic user than Win2k.......If you want I can mail you a copy, I got a shitload

Hope this helps

Well, she's working on the new comp, but she doesn't use hers like i do. OK now i have a problem with one thing you said. I don't know how to format the drive after i start up from the CD. I can get all the way to it asking what drive i want to install the new windows on and then it tells me there isn't enough space on drive C. Where do i go from there in order to format the C drive?

i don't know exactly where you're stuck at but if you can load up in Command Prompt(the blank screen with nothing but a "C:/")..then you can probably do a few commands...try

C:\format c:

or

C:\erase *.*

doing one of those might free up some space for you to install the operating system....just have the Windows CD in when you restart....it usually auto loads into the install screen..try that and see if it works out for ya...

I'm home now,but i'll try again when i go back to her house. thanks

Here are more specific directions I found......Mine were just off the top of my head.....they are a little more specific

Start your computer and then insert the Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM drive.

Your computer should automatically detect the CD, and a message "Press any key to boot CD" will be displayed for 5 seconds.

Press a key and the CD will begin to load files that are needed to begin the installation. This make take a few minutes.

When asked if you wish to install Windows XP press Enter.

You will be presented with the End User Licensing Agreement. Press F8 to accept and continue or press F3 to cancel the install.

Select the partition in which you wish to install Windows XP and press the Enter key.

The next screen asks if you wish to use the NTFS file system. This is the preferred file system, however, if you choose to use FAT32, you will not have all the security and stability features of Windows XP.

If you previously had an Operating System installed you will be given a choice of Format options . Select the Format option of your choice. When asked to start the format, press the "F" key. The formatting process may take quite a bit of time.

Setup will begin an automated loading of files which will take several minutes.
***Note - If you are clean installing using an XP Upgrade CD you will be asked for a qualifying product at this point. Just pop the CD for your older version of Windows into the drive while the XP setup completes an authenticity check. Following this you will be prompted for the XP CD and setup will continue.

After this is complete the computer will restart. Leave the XP CD in the drive but this time DO NOT press any key when the message it "Press any key to boot CD" is displayed. In 5 seconds setup will continue.

The Windows XP Setup wizard will lead you through the process of gathering information about you and your computer.

If you are connected to the Internet XP will prompt you to "Activate". Do not activate at this time. You will be prompted periodically to activate but you have 30 days to do so. Remember though that at the end of 30 days, if you have still not activated you will no longer be able to access the Desktop. Information on WPA found here Technical Details on Microsoft Product Activation for Windows XP

Following the Activation Screen you will be given the opportunity to Register Windows XP. Registration is optional and choosing not to register will not have any negative effect on your system.

You will be required to enter your account password to gain access to the Windows XP Desktop.

yeah the beer and wine really get to me,but don't want the vodka now. thanks

If you only have a 2 gig harddrive..why are you trying to install windows 2k to it?

How much Ram does the computer have?
Does the video card have it's own memory or is it shared.

The easiet thing to do would be to use a startup disk go to fdisk and format the hard drive..then install win 2k that way..if you can get it to run that is.. Don't forget to set the bios to boot from cd...and oh yeah..don't forget to take out the floppy disk when you re-boot :D

The activation is hacked so you can install as many times as you want however you need a clean serial to get updates. I have a list I use for installs and its like 3 times is the limit.

I have em too and office 2003(updates work)

is it hard to get new serials? How hard is it to change from win 98 to xp? Do I lose everything saved on my cpu?
