Overnight blood sugar levels

Lately I've been waking up in the middle of the night and am not able to get back to sleep. My doctor believes it's because my blood sugar levels have dropped during the evening. The only way I can deal with it is to get up and intake some carbs, such as a glass of milk or nuts. But it takes me another 30 to 45 minutes or so to fall asleep, so by then my sleep has been seriously disturbed and I am a zombie the next day at work and in the gym.

I've tried eating some 'slow-release' carbs just before bedtime, e.g., a handful of walnuts with a little bit of dried fruit, but it doesn't work.

Any tips / pointers / suggestions for this problem?
