Patellar Femoral Syndrome

I climbed off a stationary bike Thursday of last week and felt severe pain in both knees. Got worse the next day, fierce inflammation, could barely walk.

Went to a sports clinic where the doc said it was knee tendonitis caused by overtraining, which is bad news.

Went to see my own g.p. about it today (he was away last week) and he says the first doc misdiagnosed me, it's next to impossible to get hit by tendonitis in both knees at exactly the same time.

The g.p. thinks the problem is an inflammation of a synovial (joint-lining) membrane. Probable cause is a post-viral, self-limiting auto-immune response, or possibly the result of arthritis.

I asked him about Runner's Knee (I've been doing a shitload of cardio lately) and he says probably not, because my pain covered the entire knee on both legs and Runner's knee is usually localized to one spot about the size of a quarter. Also, Runner's Knee usually causes pain when you press the kneecap against the bone behind it, which isn't happening to me.

The trainers at my club, on the other hand, all think it may be something called Patellar Femoral Syndrome, an inflammation that happens when your knee moves out of its normal groove as it moves up and down. Cause is that my quads are too much stronger than my hams.

I checked out this syndrome on medical sites. Some sites say that it's Runner's Knee, other sites seem to indicate its quite different.

Has anybody had this condition? Is it or is it not Runner's Knee? If there's a difference, how can I tell the difference? Treatments?

I'd be grateful for any info you guys can give me. Don't want to train until I get to the bottom of this bullshit. It's been five days now.

I have been diagnosed with patellar femoral syndrome, like you said, it's when the patella rubes against the femur due to misalignment...I was supposed to do physical therapy for it (mine was so bad I could barely walk after running or playing basketball) but I didn't have time with school and work and stuff. the doc gave me a handout with some alignment exercises and I did those for a while, but what really helped was to quit running. Squats never caused my knee to hurt, but running was just about excruciating. I also started taking glucosamine/chondroitin/msm and that has done wonders. Cut back on your running and do a different form of cardio like the elliptical or do intervals on the treadmill, so the duration is less
