Sting Ray for Front Squats

Anyone ever used one of these? I normally don't like devices such as this, but considering I am not a Weightlifter (oly lifter) I really have no need to keep worrying about my f'ing rack form! Any input would be appreciated.

I don't see how a stingray would help for front squats. Where are you going to place it on your body? Isn't it specifically designed to sit across your shoulders?

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, Grizz. I've used for one regular squats, but I cant' see how it is going to fit around his neck with the bar resting in front of his neck?

I think y'all are referring to the Manta Ray for back squats? There is also one that rests on the front, and it is called the Sting Ray, unless I just have things bass ackwards here.

ooooooooohhhhh, I see now. Well, then, I don't see where it will hurt you. Personally, I think I might use one if I had access to one. My wrists are too messed up to "catch" the bar so that's out of the question for me. And doing front squats "bodybuilder style" ends up choking the hell out of me and my form deteriorates after 225+, so I think it might be a good idea.

Ah, so you choke yourself too? By the time I'm done with a set if 5 I feel the need for supplemental oxygen. They're $40, but I am such a cheap ass (and currently unemployed) I can't decide if it's worth the dough.

Another alternative but not a cheap one: http://www.prowriststraps.com/get_strength_com

My biggest concern here would be if the posts the bar rests on are metal or there isn't enough friction to prevent the barbell from sliding. I've never used it but just looking at it that would be a big worry - maybe an unfounded one though. It would be nightmarish to be struggling with a rep and have that bar start to slide because once it starts it isn't going to stop until it dumps. Like I said - hopefully they've thought it out and it isn't an issue, but that is something I've feared every time I see the picture.

I know this is going to sound arrogant-- suck it up, learn to squat. Ask the biggest, baddest looking guy in your gym to watch you. 9 times out of 10, you will be respected and make a new friend. Proper form protects the body and minimizes injuries while forcing it to maintain and gain.

I know how to squat. I was referring to a front squat. And I also know how to front squat, it is a matter of should I really give a fuck about a proper rack when I am not an Oly Lifter. Surely you misunderstood my post?

The biggest guy in my gym, proudly, squats like shit. Of course, I am in a Gold's. :D

Sting Ray comes with high praise from most if not all who've used it. I too must choke myself in order place the bar in the proper position. As Grizz pointed out, if you don't crush your wind pipe, you'll end up with a very sore back and strong shoulders.

Perhaps try Ebay or one of those sites with lists of used gym equipment. Gyms drop like flies, and there is almost never a need for buying new.
