How did you go from 25% fed and 8% state tax brackets to 0%/0% effective tax???

I was self emplyed, so there were no withholdings and when it came time to do my taxes (I did annual, should switch to quarterly) I had so much mileage and deductions that I went down below the fed and state tax brackets.
