Testing Your Max Too Often

I watched this last night I am gulity testing my way too often ive gotten away with it since im fairly new to powerlifting about a year. But what i do notice in my gym is trainers holding the lifters way back and they have no idea what their max is.

I watch lifters go into comp all the time and leave a ton of weight on the platform. Maybe its just me but i see no glory in not struggling and going all out for your last attempt. Doing max often is not smart by any means but i think its important to definitely test strength maybe just not max.

This is where intelligent programming comes in. During the peaking phase you'll do some heavy triples and doubles and that'll give you a very good idea where you're at. Then come meet day you'll base your third attempts on your second ones.

There's a reason most elite lifters only test at meets. Testing in the off season doesn't serve any purpose. A heavy triple, double or AMRAP is all you need, if you really need feedback like he was saying.

Personally I'd rather leave 5-10lbs on the platform than miss the lift and have my second attempt be my highest. I've done three meets and only missed one lift in all three combined. I'm in this for the highest possible total and missing lifts doesn't get you there.

I was the same way you are when I first started powerlifting. Eventually I trusted these elite guys saying this and stopped testing and hitting failure all the time and my lifts have benefitted greatly.

I dont miss lifts either done 5 meets lol but i am aware this wont last my body was ready for PR'S every 2 weeks 1st 7 months until i broke my previous state record last meet. I just started sumo after 3 times i was able to pull 500 so theres hope for me i can do those till my back recovers.

Yeah, I was like that at first, too. There's going to come a time when your body can't handle it and make progress like that anymore though.

Powerlifting is crazy we suffer alot of pain get injured all for worthless medals and a few dollar trophies lmao..... I gotta be more careful my buddies are savages and dont believe in programs and one of my friend tore his bicep and instead of taking time off he switched his deadlift grip and continued the very next week hahaPoint Blur_Jan272017_090304.jpg

Yep, all for the glory and the love of lifting heavy things.

Not believing in programs doesn't make much sense though. Thats like not believing in science. Be careful with that for sure.

How you liking it over here by the way?

Cool - congrats on the medals and the hard work behind them.

Its awesome here actually traffic and powerlifters wich is rare! Well my friends whole theory about programs is we listen to how we feel. Some days 60% can feel like 100.

We do all the different style lifting like using chains and bands we incorporate speed days. We have also went to expos and talk to big names and they say do what works. They asked us are your lifts going up every meet? Our answer is yes and they say well there you go everyone is different.

I cant say who but we have a local somewhat celebrity in our gym gets to lift and travel with all the big names trains with us once inawhile and i am yet to see him with a pen and paper

I also just talked to Stan efferding at expo and he also went over that back in the day we just trained like savages and how important it is to have a strong team. Not saying programs dont work but how else are trainers gonna make money online if they dont offer programs

Yeah, we're really trying to expand the powerlifting community here. We just got our own forum this month. So if you know powerlifters on other boards send them on over. We're going to try to get some stickies up soon as well.

As far as going by feel I'm on board with using RPE to pick your top sets of the day, but going without a structured routine is just willingly leaving a vital component out of your training and slowing progress unnecessarily. You can argue you're still making progress, but I don't think anyone would argue that you'd make more with a great coach or routine. It's kind of a making progress in spite of training rather than because of it thing.

I mean you could just take random amounts of gear and never get bloodwork and go by feel and you'd still make progress, right? It's just not optimal. Same with training.

That's just my opinion. I like to know the hows and whys of getting stronger and although there's a lot of trial and error in training I like to minimize the error if possible. There's so much science to it that's been compiled from countless lifters experiences. No need to just wing it anymore.

Again, they've already done that in the past and figured out what works. Why waste time trying to reinvent the wheel, you know?

As far as a team I have no idea. I've always lifted alone. Most people at my gym don't even lift by my definition of the word.

You don't even have to have a trainer. There is a wealth of information available that's been written by brilliant and successful lifters. Best thing to do is study it all and apply it to your training. Sometimes a coach helps though to see things from another perspective.

:)

There's a very good documentary on Eddie Hall on Netflix. How good is this documetary you ask? Well it's so fucking good they show you a clip where they are interviewing his wife and you can see Eddie Hall pissing on a tree in his backyard in the background :)

That sucks bro i train in a facility inly powerlifters i think it helps so much having friends slap the shit out of your back and yelling at you. Especially on squats you are willing to push tje limit knowing you have side and back spotters. I use to always train alone and didnt reallly see my potential until i trained with guus stronger than me.
