Thoughts on Low Volume Training

What are your experiences with high intensity (to failure) low volume (1-2 sets) training programs. Hass et. al. 2000 reports equal mass and strength gains between experienced weightlifters who used 1 set per exercise over 13 week period vs those that used 3 sets per exercise.

Personally, I find it great. I do a three day split consisting of Bench, Squat, and Deadlift + auxiliary exercises. It saves time and I'm rarely sore the day after yet my strength gains are continuous. However, I'm also relatively untrained. I've been lifting consistently for approximately a year. I was wondering if anyone who has trained longer has any experience with this type of workout and if so what are your thoughts?
