tricep pushdowns, your opinion?

HARDCOREGUNS

What do you guys think of tricep pushdowns as far as putting on mass. How do they compare to close grips, tricep dips, etc??? Should i sub them for skulls or close grips (the two things i hit my tris with currently).?

i think for mass, you cant beat Close Grip Benches, Weighted Dips, skyllcrushers...

however, i would use calbes or dumbells for 1/3rd of my workout.

Pushdowns are more of a finishing or warm up movement for me, with close grip benches, weighted dips being more for mass. If you want to tourch your tris, do your pushdowns in strip sets or drop sets and feel the fire!!

Demarco

for those just getting into weight training, listen to demarco. warm up every single time!!!

i remember i used to jump into my work sets with no warm up when i was younger. i had no problems back them.

but now, i got tendonitis in several sites that i'm sure not warming up was one of the causes!

maybe i dont do them right, but CLOSE-GRIPS dont do much for me. i cant feel them hitting the tris as good as pushdowns. i can feel skulls but pushdowns give me a good pump and make them feel fatigued. also, i train alone so close-grips would require a spot that i dont have. i use dumbells for chest, i squat in a power rack, i deadlift, etc. i learned to train alone but my tris lag. i cant wait to get back into training soon.

Try supersetting the CG with some Band pushdowns. Youll feel it.

When it comes to growth and training, two facors really count: muscle overload and muscle confusion. Overload is easy: use more weight as consitently as possible. I would not ignore any type of movement. Yeah, some are better than other for mass, but if you incorporate and rotate a lot of different exercises, it keeps the muscle guessing and growing. I would rotate them in there.

For hypertrophic growth focus on the 6-10 rep range..and use heavier compound movements.. such as Close grip Bench presses, JM presses.. and something that works well is overhead dumbbell extensions.

Go heavy enough that you can do say 8 reps but not ten.. yet don't go so light that you can do 20 reps when you're only working on a 10 rep scheme.

You need to avoid most accessary exercises... The Cable cross over is the biggest waste of time for beginning body builders..

Stick with heavy compound movements..

Squats.. Dead Lifts.. Up right rows.. Bench press .. Bent over barbell rows.. these are the exercises that promote growth.. not those silly little pec deck machines..

I think as long as you switch up how your doing your pushdowns along with others ( skulls, dips, closegrip bench) they can be beneficial. A pushdown can be done in many ways to help isolate each head of the tricep,so dont get stuck doing them the old fashioned way of strictly standing and pushing down in front of your body.I have some killer routines for tri's that include alot of varied ranges of pushdowns,I'd be happy to give you a few if your interested, but yea! I agree with lastatgear ,keep the muscle shocked and confused and they can be beneficial.

As far as mass, I feel french curls (skull crushers) are key.
Close grip never did much for me, too much involvement of secondary muscles. (i.e., pecs and delts)
French curls isolate the tri much better than close grip.
Start off with them, then go onto another movement. Finish off with pushdowns and vary your technique (over head, standing, etc)
Keep reps at 6 to 8, use heavier weights and impecable form. Doing them right not only isolates your tris, but you lessen the chance of injury.

If I have someone speak a forein language to my muscles, will that be enough to confuse them?

Close grip smythe presses
Reverse grip smythe presses
Skullcrushers

Those 3 WILL put mass on your tris. And if you are wondering why the Smythe machine......well, I train alone, so it works real good without a spotter. You could also do them in a power cage.

What is a "smythe" machine?

But Phreezer, I see many personal trainers in my gym advocate crossovers and pec dec. They must know what they are talking about. I see the credentials by their name, CPT. That's like being a god right.

there is not enough wieght on the tri pulldowns for me.i can do the whole stack pretty easily

yeah yeah yeah so use the lat pulldown machine as a tricep pushdown ;). or does the one in your gym only go up to the same weight as the pushdown machine? well i dont basically never do pushdowns anyway.
