I've spent time in Israel. Do not fuck around with illegal things there, and hell no, being an American holds zero weight if you get in trouble. There is a strong possibility that local police will stop and search you if you're out late at night, at least in the towns in the Golan Heights. Let them do their thing, they are gone as soon as they show up. If you're southern, spend a night in Eilat. It's an amazing town. Tel Aviv is the shit, really the only modern city in the country. Don't wander into the desert at night, It's not ok haha. Not joking either. If you're out in the boondocks at night stay with your group. The desert has plenty of things, human and non human, that can fuck your world up.

Have you heard stories or know anything about what goes on in the desert at night? Any personal experiences or experiences that you know of?
Have always wanted to and eventually will visit Israel and this totally caught my curiosity.

So I've been to most parts of Israel, some spots weren't safe enough at the time so I never got to go. I specifically remember not being able to go to Haifa because it was a hotbed for killings. We're talking early 2000s, I was over there when that bad ass tsunami came out of the Indian ocean in December.
One place we experienced was a Bedouin camp in the Negev. It was radical how little these people had and how they were able to make survival happen so easily. We got to learn all about them, their history and all sorts of crazy Arabic shit. Well, over the course of our stay a few bags disappeared from inside our tent. Not mine though thankfully, it seemed like affluent people were targeted. Nice cameras, fancy bags etc. One of the group members was starting to go ballistic and I can't blame him, he was left with basically nothing.
More back story, we are chaperoned by a handful of IDF soldiers, fyi. Like 75 to 3 ratio give or take...
While dude is loosing his mind, he's obviously pissing off the Bedouins at the same time and they're starting to gather and talk amongst themselves. I have no clue what was being said but it wasn't good. The IDF group had to get involved and after they came back from talking with the Bedouin dudes it was clear it wasn't in our best interest to press any of these issues. The few IDF soldiers we had were out numbered by a good margin and the tour members like myself were at a retarded disadvantage: no weapons, terrain knowledge, etc. Prognosis not good
Essentially we were told the desert is big, empty and hungry. We'd be fed to it if necessary.
We stayed in the tent for the rest of the night and continued south in the morning.

I do know it can be like the wild west out there though and lots of rebels belonging to different factions where anything goes. What a different life.
It was absolutely a vulnerable feeling.
I went over there through an organization called birthright Israel. It's a free trip over there and back, guided tour, hotel/hostel accommodations, food and what not.
The IDF was part of that package.
And do not go to Savat for American New year's Eve on a Friday. That's not a good idea. Holy city and all...

I camped with those Bedouins out in the Nagev, and they were cool as hell to us, haha. No bags went missing, guess your group got unlucky that night. I don't think it's anything too crazy comparative to any other civilized country, but yes, they certainly have that as an issue. Jerusalem actually has a decent issue with it, which tells me that it's probably all over the country.

Maybe? I'm willing to bet there are quite a few camps involved in the process. That organization brings a shit load of people into Israel. I'm guessing we just got a bad draw out of available camps
