New York Times
The wife of Greg Anderson, Barry Bondss former trainer, agreed last year to cooperate with the federal prosecutors leading the perjury investigation of Bonds, according to several people briefed on the matter. But shortly before Andersons wife, Nicole Gestas, was scheduled to meet with the prosecutors, she backed out of the agreement and has steadfastly refused to cooperate since then, the people said. Earlier this week it was revealed that several years ago, prosecutors sent an undercover female agent to join the gym where Gestas worked. The authorities hoped that the agent would befriend Gestas and get her to talk about Bonds, but the effort did not prove fruitful. [...]
The effort to get him to talk began shortly after Anderson was released from prison in 2006 after serving several months in connection with a guilty plea in the Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative steroid-distribution case. At that point, Anderson refused to testify before a grand jury that was hearing evidence about whether Bonds perjured himself when he testified before the Balco grand jury in 2003 that he never knowingly used performance-enhancing drugs.
As a result, Anderson was held in contempt and went back to prison for over a year. He was released only after Bonds was indicted on Nov. 15, 2007. The next day, prosecutors sent a target letter to Gestas, threatening to charge her with conspiracy to commit a crime.
Then the authorities went further, threatening to charge her mother, Madeleine Gestas, with crimes connected to her finances. Prosecutors, according to one person briefed on the matter, made it clear to the lawyers representing Nicole Gestas that if Anderson testified, the government would drop the investigations of both her and her mother.
Then, last month, federal agents raided the California home of Madeleine Gestas and seized a variety of documents. Still, through all of this, there has been no indication that Anderson is backing away from his refusal to talk.
