Vertical shins in deadlift set up WTF?

Been watching some YouTube gurus set up the dead lift. I get the reason behind vertical bar path and shins perpendicular to ground but dam I can not have perpendicular shins to the ground, a neutral back, shoulders in front of bar etc all at once unless my ass is almost on the ground.

Working on getting a vid up, but sheesh the correct set be hard to get.

Any tips?

My body type is long back, short shins, longer upper leg bone than lower. Right on 6 foot high.

Dynamic stretching maybe? Lots of mobility work. I'm similar to you but I think my upper/lower leg split is more even than you describe yours.

I know when I go to the bar to begin my lift my arms start pointing straight out. That helps keep my back in a good position. I don't have to go nearly as low as you either.

I think I will have to travel at some point to find a dead lift specialist, my short limbs and long torso I believe is a problem that needs a specialist to coach on.

Kinda good body type for wrestling but shit for surfing.

I've thought about going to one of the starting strength seminars. Just for the experience of going and I like Rippatoe

Isn't sumo cheating?

Only bb guys in my gym, they consider a low bar squat and arched back bench cheating.

They don't know what they're talking about. The key word there is "bb guys." I always squat low bar and until recently was pulling sumo. My state record deadlift was sumo and yet it's still a record.

Pull and squat the way it's most natural to you and that allows you to use the most weight.

No sumo isn't cheating and in a lot of cases it's harder to do. Took ages to bring my sumo up equal to my conventional.
BB is different than PL. Who gives a shit what they think? BB is about the pump and feeling the muscle, PL is about moving heavy ass weight.
Different goals, different techniques..

One thing I always wondered, strength requires muscle mass. Why do bb achieve so much muscle volume and mass but are typically not moving as big weights TYPICALLY, not always.

Hypertrophy of the muscle fibers can be attained through volume, pump, Tut, etc. You can gain a ton of strength without achieving any of those. Most strength training is low rep, heavy weight, maximum rest between sets.
To gain muscle size you're working in a higher rep range, less rest between sets, more time under tension, etc.

I've seen 120 lbs ladies squatting 300 at PL meets... Put a lot of gym rat bodybuilders to shame lol.

I believe it, I am already stronger than the bb guys that have been pinning, bulking, cutting....for years.

I am just trying to get it on a physiological/science level etc.

If it wasn't for the scabs on my shins nobody could tell I started training and my strength has made a big improvement.

@Perrin Aybara ;) yes sir it is.

For you to build size you need muscle adaptation (micro that then repair to be larger and thicker then previously to adapt to their outside stressor) size will come with strength undoubtably more muscle mass means more strength to lift. The big difference is the motor neuron adaptation that comes with strength training. By working with submaximal loads and not frying our your CNS you build neural pathways that weren't previously there teaching your body how to fire more muscle fibres more rapidly when stressed. These neural adaptations don't come quick but it's eveident when a wee guy is stronger then someone 1/3 bigger then them, they don't have more muscle or better leverages per-say but they do have a stronger motor neuron pathway and have more type 2 muscle fibres firing upon a stressor.

Also fuck all the gurus saying all that shit. You don't need vertical shins and all of that combination it matters on your body's proportions. I don't have vertical shins just make sure your scapula spine is directly over the bar and you maintain a tight core with neutral spine (hunched shoulders are a more advanced pull technique that should be left for guys with a lot of experience) and proper lat endgame to pulling down and back. Give a video of your setup and I bet you I can get you into the most advantageous position whether it be sumo or conventional
