Recurring Sciatica

I injured my back about
18 months ago. I couldn't lift or try to lift for 4 months after injury. I had back weakness and radiating pain that went from lower right side of back, down right ass cheek, down side of leg. Took about a year after injury to feel somewhat normal. I have had recurring back spasms and slight sciatica since then, but it usually comes and goes in short bouts. However I tweaked my back about 4 weeks ago deadlifting, I had back spasms that I thought may have been back pumps (I was running gear). The spasms subsided and I was pain free after maybe 15 minutes. I felt fine, no problems until about 2 days afterwards.

Now for the past 4 weeks I have been getting bouts of sciatica. It does not impact my strength and I am not experiencing any noticeable back weakness. Usually I am getting a very irritating tingling sensation that runs mainly down my right lower back, down ass cheek, and occasionally down side of right leg. Sometimes it is coupled with pain. When I am squatting or deadlifting it actually feels better, but about 2 days later, sometimes next day I get a flare up.

Is it safe to lift through this? I never had x-Ray or MRI from when I hurt my back 18 months ago because I was in a place where I was not afforded the luxury of decent healthcare. If I was experiencing severe pain or back weakness I would have backed off on lifting already. But I don't know if continuing to lift is prolonging this flare up or will it subside on its own regardless? I am close to the point of seeing a doctor. I can't take NSAIDs for pain relief due to GI issues and Tylenol doesn't do anything when there is pain. The tingling/tickling sensation is almost worse than the pain and it drives me crazy.

The stretches I have read about doing for sciatica actually irritate the problem and make the tingling worse. Though if there is pain the stretches tend to lessen it and tingling takes its place. I know narcotic pain killers would help but no doctor is generally willing to write a script not even for Tylenol 3 w/ codeine. The idea of spending months on narcotics isn't too appealing either. Though I wouldn't take them every day.

Yeah thats some crazy pain isnt it ? I had the same thing , Sciatica , right leg started at the glute and went down the outside quad . 4-6 months of hell , but finally after 3 months of PT and then my squats which I jumped back in on I beat it .

But every once in a while it lets me know its still there , probably hibernating the lil bitch . Going on 3 years now good . Take it slow , but do exercise it when your able . Rest it good too , it will need more rest than your other leg , I found that out too . :D

Being out that long i would run and get fully tested. I screwed up my back squatting where i leaned forward with bad form with 4 plates on each side while on my back. Destroyed for days I remained. Couldn't walk, get out of bed, cried in pain i literally have never felt so much pain in my life. Consider I've never broken a bone don't know the feeling. Two weeks afterwards I was finally fully functional after nothing but being with bed rest . Thats two weeks compared to your over a year and symptoms continue to reside. And yes two weeks into the injury I went to the gym and started tearing that place apart. Its in my blood [}:)][}:)]

I got it doing deadlifts . Ive since improved my form on deads and just now added them back to my workouts . Now its squats then deads in my HST workouts. I personally told Mr.Sciatica that he wasnt ruining my workouts , maybe a lil set-back but thats all . I will prevail !

I deal with this about every 18 months back about 7-8 years ago I knocked my lower spine out of alignment squatting this was back when i squatted heavy. It is where my spine and my tail bone come together and it tends to slip a bit out of place and pinch on the nerve. When it fires up it usually requires a 2-3 week run at the witch doctor my chiro. I am dealing with it right now. It is at its worst sitting down and I just drove 2 hours to and fro today so that was fun. It has never stopped me from working out but it runs from glute down the outside quad. The thing though is I know what is causing it and I just need to fork over the dough to get it realigned.

In your case G85 I would either go get xrays from the doc. What i don't like about the doc's office is they tend to be operation crazy. You can go to the chiro but they play a different game too. So it is kind of pick your poison. If you are in a better place as far as insurance go and see what the doc has to say. Sometimes the chiro is covered to but usually you have to pay him if your deductibleis not met. I would want to at least know where the pressure on the sciatica is coming from.

X ray won't usually tell you anything. You need an MRI. I would not go to a chiropractor....I SAY AGAIN.....DO NOT LET A CHIROPRACTOR WORK ON YOU WITHOUT GETTING AN MRI FIRST. sorry for screaming but wish someone would have gave me that advice. Chiropractor put me in the hospital and was in dilated and prednisone for weeks. I had sciatica down to.my feet. My toes were numb for 6 months even after I started feeling better. And another suggestion dont use heat if you do no more then a hot shower. Its prob inflammation and ice is the only thing that will help with that. Heat will only irritate it more.

Makes sense to me. I can see a chiro really jacking somebody up. MRI yes Bigshadow I believe that is what I meant but did not say and they are totally 2 different things. Good catch.

I tend to tweak my back several times a year and sciatic pain always shows up a few days later. I've found 20 minutes a night on an inversion table lets it heal a lot faster, like days instead of weeks.

I am trying to get my Brother in laws table right now. I sure hope your right Flenser because I want this shit to go away and I dont want to give my Gh money to the chiro.

Wow, that's a lot of chiro money. My chiro tried to warn me away from getting one. Said back in the 70's they were pretty popular until a few people had strokes. I didn't find much info on it, though. I think he just knew the table would fix a lot of what I had been paying him to do.

My father has bad discs in his back. Has suffered for many years. As long as I can remember. He called me and asked me what I thought about one of those and I did some research and it seems to help a lot of people. He bought a teeter and the first time he used it he called me the next day and told me its the first time in almost 30 years he hasnt woke up without back pain. Hes had it for almost 2 months now I think and swears it healed him. He hasnt had any back pain since day one. And he has degenerative discs. Doctors told him he needed surgery. He refused.

I need me one of them bastards, no where to put it though. What is the exact product name?

Teeter is the brand my dad got. They make cheap ones but he researched them and found that they were the best and the original board. Guess a guy named Teeter developed it. If you want pm me and ill ask my dad tomorrow the exact model he got if your interested.

Ha, my dad SWEARS by that fucking thing too.. Literally would not shut up about it for the first few months he had it.. He made me go on it and of course I flipped on my freaking head..

Damn isn't it supposed to strap you in or something lol. I can see it now, I use the thing to help my sciatica and end up with a head or neck injury instead.

I might buy one if it really helps. I keep getting these bouts of sciatica. While I can still function and normally there is no severe pain and no back weakness, that damned tingling sensation drives me crazy. I just feel like stabbing myself in the lower back and right ass cheek sometimes. It's not like the pins and needles, or numbness feeling, but it is like a tickling feeling that radiates down right lower back, down right ass cheek, and sometimes down side/top of leg. If anyone has ever had restless leg syndrome it is like that but in your back, ass cheek and leg. Opiate or opioid drugs tend to ease the tingling as well as pain. I cannot take NSAIDs due to GI issues. Haven't tried muscle relaxers or neurontin. I have tried tramadol with no success. Higher doses of benzos like klonopin and Xanax seem to help some. Xanax more than klonopin. But even small doses 5mg or less of oxycodone relieves it for 3-5 hours.

Thank God it is not constant, if it was I would probably have went to a doctor by now :p. All they want to do is tell you to take an NSAID and might recommend cortisone shots (yay!).

When I initially hurt my back I would have definitely sought out adequate medical care if it was available to me at the time. Terrible pain, like when I injured a ligament in my knee but worse. I guess since you need to use your back so much it's hard to keep it stationary. Hurt to breathe, took like 5 minutes of horrible pain to roll over, and taking a deuce was torture. I had back weakness too and my legs felt like giving out one time when I had to walk up some steps. Scary shit.
