Safe-Mail attacked: not getting emails

The past two days I did not receive replies to any emails in my safe-mail account.
This sucks as I was in the middle of two different important emails conversations/orders -- now sources are going to think I am one of those dicks that orders and then does not reply or pay.

It was very difficult to even log in; often it took 5+ mins to get the page to load.
Now today I spoke with a source who said he had emailed me--I checked and still nothing.
So I made a couple free accounts with various email services and sent myself emails; none of the emails I sent ever showed up in my inbox on safe-mail. I made outgoing emails and those did make it to the intended addresses. I just can not receive--fucking really sucks and will ruin shit with two good sources.

Anyway, I just wanted to give people a heads up. Also, get the word out if you know anyone that this will matter to (good sources or friends etc) so they know what is going on with the lack of communications.

Latest update from Safe-mail - it will "permanently remove about 250,000 user accounts that were involved in activity which violates the Safe-mail.net Agreement and policy".

Safe-mail.net is down for critical maintainance.

1. • The Safe-mail.net system suffered a major storage hardware crash.
     About 80% of user's data is not affected by the crash, as we already moved it to a new system during the last few months.
     The rest is either to be salvaged from the crashed storage, or will be restored from the Backup system.
2. At this time we will permanently remove about 250,000 user accounts that were involved in activity which violates the Safe-mail.net Agreement and policy.
   Note: Only those who violates our policy will be deleted. Most accounts are not affected.
3. Free web based registration to Safe-mail.net will not be available.
   Free accounts will be opened by sending a request to Safe-mail.net.
4. In the near future, separate subsystems will be used for Free and Premium accounts.
   This will enable better service and even enable shutdown of the Free subsystem without affecting the Premium users.

wow this really sucks. I do not have a copy of my contacts (so I guess I just lost a lot of valuable info) and worse is that they do have those "List" emails.

That's the million dollar question.

I never figured out how to delete a safe-mail account. I used to create the account, use it for whatever, then delete all messages and abandon it a few days later. If they ever come back, I'll probably still use them for temporary accounts.

I think it's safe to assume Safe-Mail.net can decrypt the emails of user accounts. They have already acknowledged giving up user information to non-Israeli law enforcement agencies.

When I reached out to Safe-mail for comment, Amiram Ofir, Safe-mail’s President and CEO, responded in an email that the company and its employees “certainly are not aware of any criminal activity,” adding that the company does “follow court orders that are issued in Israel by an Israeli court. Any other law enforcement agency should contact the Israeli authorities.” It’s worth noting, however, that Israel signed a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with the U.S. in 1998. An MLAT request was used to image the Silk Road web server, according to the criminal complaint of Sept. 27, 2013.

Ofir told me that communications between users and the web service are SSL protected, and that information stored on the server is encrypted with user-specific keys. When asked if Safe-mail has received court orders issued by an Israeli court on behalf of a non-Israeli law enforcement agency, such as the FBI, Ofir replied with a short “Yes.” My followup email, asking if Safe-mail has the ability to decrypt information without a user’s key, went unanswered.

Its definitely not the safest but does provide a level of security and features beyond standard email providers. Having said that, ive since made the switch to Tutanota and really enjoy the security and anonymity it offers.

Protonmail.ch and Tutanota.de are the best at the moment.

Neither has the ability to decrypt user data (according to their websites).

Both are completely transparent and publicly disclose all requests for user data from government entities and corporations.

Both provide details of these requests, including every instance in which a request was granted in a warrant canary published on their respective websites.

And as of today, neither protonmail or tutanota have granted any request.

I wrote Tutanota and asked about the multiple email feature and if it was available for Premium clients. They responded that this feature was at the top of their to-do list. However, when i tried it, it worked!

Protonmail offers endless dummy emails as part of the free service. No matter how many dummy emails are created they all link back to the original. Pretty sweet feature

Tutanota continues to impress me. I would gladly pay for the service. But don't have to. That, to me, is good business.

As long as they uphold their policies moving forward, I see no reason to use anyone else.
