I'm looking into building a home gym soon. one thing I'd miss at the gym is the cable machines, lat pull downs, tricep press downs, cable flies...

I've pondered on ways I can replace these exercises. Maybe replicate some of them with bands anchored at different positions. buying expensive weight stacks tjat have a high and low pulley.

I ran into this piece of equipment:

seems like a good substitute. I figured two of those rigged to opposite sides of a power rack and I might be able to do cable flies. I seen a video where someone rigged two, one up top and one down to create a low pulley, for cable rows, curls and the likes.

I'm wondering if anyone has or used this piece of equipment. or if you have any other suggestions please let me know.

I thought about picking this up too. But have been looking more into just making one now instead

No, thats not an issue though I enjoy building stuff. When I go get the stuff I'll post the cost if you want.

I seen a diy video on YouTube, it doesn't look difficult to do. I'm just curious as to how much it'd save vs buying a spud inc set up.

Here is a photo of my pulley systems in my basement gym. Look on craigslist. It took me a while to find the lat pulldown machine I liked. Welded steel pegs to hold the plates and and nice stick steel cord. It has both a high and low pulley. I use it for all forms of lat pulldowns and low pulley rows. The furthest away in the picture is a power rack with a pulley attachment on the back that is height adjustable. I use it for all forms of tricep pushdowns, ab pulldowns, pull throughs, etc.

You should check out Craigslist. I got a heavy duty/squat rack/bench/pull down/row combo for about 300 bucks that works perfectly . For cable stuff I use resistance bands.

got these old school iron plates off craigslist. they're in kg, so the lbs are off slightly. for e.g. it's 20kg/44lbs plate, 15kg/33lbs, 10kg/22lbs, 5kg/11lbs, 2.5kg/5.25lbs, 1kg/2.75lbs

something like that.

i think i got around 360lbs for 135. one mand junk is another mand treasure.

now I'm building a lifting platform, to drill my rack into...20170219_185625.jpg20170219_194721.jpg

hardest part was cutting the horse stall mats to fit. they're so heavy, and at 3/4 in. thick a box cutter barely slices it. just about done just gotta cut another mat to cover those little square areas. not looking forward to wrestling with the mats again.

my home gym is coming together. once I have my basic set up, I'll start looking into a pulley/cable system.

to be continued...

You could do pull ups, lying triceps extensions and dumbbell flyes instead of pull downs, triceps extensions and cable flyes. Maybe a little band work like you were saying in the first post. There isn't much that can't be done another way. Good score on the weights, by the way.

yea definitely, those will be staples. I want the pulleys to add a little variety.

A good sized metal or wood-frame shed like 10x14 would be a nice size for a basic gym if you have the room on your property for it. The one that Kap73 has is like triple the size and sure is darn roomy.

I considered that, but my garage is big enough for my gym, and if I park cars close to the doors I can still fit 2 cars I it

I decided to build my own pulley system from shit I could find at home depot. I seen a few different diy videos in youtube for inspiration. All in all everyrhinf was cheap, maybe totaled at around 150 ish i forget. 20170417_122736.jpg

I'm still a couple carabiners short of a full working system, I may eventually add two pulleys at the bottom just to add a a little low pulley versatility.

Now I gotta put in an order for some attachments and I'm all set.
