Legendary strongman — and eight-time Arnold Strongman Classic Champion — Zydrunas Savickas announced via Instagram that he’s pulling out of this year’s competition after sustaining an injury in training. The Arnold Strongman Classic is set to start on March 3rd.

From Savickas:

With sadness I must announce that practicing superyoke got injury and not able to participate in the Arnold Strongman Classic 2017. Superyoke weighing 710kg squeezed my nerves and disconnect my deltoid muscle. Reahabilitation may take about 2 months. I hope asap to return to competitions. Thank you to all my fans and I am sorry that in this Arnold appear. I wish for all the participants good performance and prevent injuries.

One of the most celebrated strength athletes in Europe and abroad, Savickas’ withdrawal will come as a disappointment to many strongman fans, who were anticipating a heated competition between “Big Z” and reigning World’s Strongest Man Brian Shaw.

Late in 2016, Savickas made waves on social media for documenting his impressive offseason weight cut, which has become a habit of the Lithuanian strongman. Perhaps even more impressive than his numerous records and victories is Savickas’ longevity; at 41 years old, he’s arguably still among the top handful of strongman athletes in the world, as evidenced by his victory at the 2016 Arnold Strongman Classic.

We’re wishing “Big Z” a speedy recovery, and the strength world hopes to see him back in competition form soon.

Just to put this in perspective, 710kg equals 1,565 lbs.

I believe Zydrunas held the world record for the super yoke at one time and probably still does.

Damn...that sure is a hell of a lot of weight indeed! Impressive I have to say and hope the big guy recovers.

Zavickas never gets hurt. Which is remarkable given he competes among the worlds best even past 40. Many have come and left. BIG Z still stands. Kinda like the Brett Favre of WSM

I wish I had his longevity. He was injured once before and this year was supposed to be his comeback... Not now though. He's not done yet though.

The thing about Zavickus i always noticed is his pressing strength. I dont know too many strongmen that have his sort of static pressing strength. With no leg recruitment he can clean over 400+ lbs on a bar as thich as a pepsi can and press it for multiple reps. Just static pressing. No pushing off with the legs.

I remember one guy back in the day could hang with Big Z. Hes dead now. His name was Johnny Perry and he stood 6'5 400lbs. They could shoulder press like no other

Here he is doing 501 x 1
Which is a world record

He's known for his log lift ability... There is a scene in the Eddie Hall doc on Netflix that shows him competing in the Arnold. The first several guys can't press the log, then Zydrunas comes out and presses it multiple times.

This is a different year I think:
