Best way to filter?

Did my first batch yesterday, and it was painful. Everything was extremely easy, up until I had to filter it all out. Made 50ml, and each vial (of 10 ml) took at the very least 30 mins to fill. The 0.22 filter was dropping one drop every few seconds. I swore to find a better way for my next batch in the future.

What is another way to filter, a way that's a lot less time consuming. What do you use to filter? So far I'm reading on bottle top filters, but if there's a better way, I'll look that way. Idc if it requires buying additional components, as long as those components stay within <200$. Hand pumps?

Was it heated up or did you try to fill at room temperature? Try keeping it heated. It's less of a pain. I use to do .45 double filtered. No problems. .22 is going to be a little tougher cause the thicker oil. Usually use that for bac water.

Room temperature. Would heating it up have made a big difference? How did the .45 compare to the .22 in terms of speed?

Yes. Keeping it heated while filtering is the way to go. .45 is night and day compared to .22

0.45 ain't enough and will allow some bacteria or spores to pass thru
0.22 instead
(actually there are scientific studies that show 0.22 still allows some bacteria to pass thru, and 0.10um filters are best)

get a 60 mL (I found a 50 mL one) syringe that fits in a caulk gun as to push the plunger with way less effort.

Yeah I've seen a lot of people recommending using a caulk gun, I'll give that a try. Have you used both caulk, and bottle top filters? Which one did you feel was better?

I've used both. Bottle top filter is a Beautiful thing. It's a little more of an investment but pays off big time in the long run.that calk gun bull shit is for the birds

Bottle top if your planning going over 200-300ml for sure. You just set it and forget it.

Can't help ya with that. I use the whatman 500ml bottletop filters with a 500ml glass media bottle. Never had a problem.

This has been asked before, but I've never seen it answered. When you filter 100ml or more of gear, how do you transfer it safely to vials to remain sterile? Using a caulk gun, or no gun, you at least are filtering directly into your vial.

For the OP: try using an 18g needle for for the syringe. Also use a second 18g needle poked through to vent the bottle as the pressure builds. Did you use a vent?

Why use a hand pump when you can get a 2.5 cfm vacuum pump off ebay for $50 and a decent hand pump will cost close to that anyways? You can also put an inline tee in your vacuum line with a valve so you can better control the amount of vacuum. You can also install a gauge in the line just put it close to filter.

Use a 60 ml sterile syringe with no needle attached to draw up your gear. Then inject into your sterile vial.

Yep one time the pressure from the chaulk hun blew the filter loose and oil and precious heat flew all over the ceiling. Don't use syringe filters unless your doing one or two vilas at a time.
